"Alumni of the Mysterious Package Company"...what does everyone think? This looks like it errs on the more family-friendly, later era of MPC, so I'm on the fence. www.curiouscorrespondence.com

They lost me with "elective hint system".
That and "we embrace paper engineering".
But I'm curious as to which MPC alumni they are.

I was put off by the same, as well as the whole 'family fun' aspect. There's nothing wrong with that, obviously, just not my thing. But, I went ahead with Chapter 1 just to see what the experience was like. We'll see.

I received a postcard from them. I am thinking about trying it, but they have hints...What I liked about MPC was no hints. Volume 4 took all the challenge out of it because the hints and solutions were all easily accessible.

There's a certain irony in the fact that MPC built a community for puzzle-solvers who want to work cooperatively over a long term to play an ongoing game, and now that community is still around but the game isn't.

I sent an inquiry and one of my questions was who was involved. This was the response.
"All we can really let on is that we are a couple of the creatives that worked on Hastur, The Buried Puppet and The Disappearance of Cadet Turner."
They wouldn't confirm that a certain individual wasn't on the team which tends to imply to me that they in fact are. So I have to decide whether it's worth overlooking or not. Right now my feeling is probably not. But I have about a week to mull it over.
They also confirmed that the paper engineering shouldn't need too much assembly. So hopefully no disagreeable goats, which definitely makes me more willing to try.

They lost me with "elective hint system". That and "we embrace paper engineering". But I'm curious as to which MPC alumni they are. The "embracing paper engineering" is exactly what gave me pause. While $20 isn't much to toss away on an envelope full of paper, that leads to a fun puzzle experience...I just fear that it's going to mostly be paper things made to look like other things. For example, the "keys" in the first mailing look to just be die-cut paper keys.

With the Federal Unemployment in the US currently in limbo, the decision is thankfully being made for me. The idea seems interesting, but I'm not a huge fan of the new things that the MPC has been doing (even though this is a "separate company") and I know that I would be comparing this to C&C. I'll wait a bit and see what the feedback is like after a few chapters. With so many monthly puzzle/mystery subscriptions boxes that are $20-$30 on the market nowadays, I'm interested to see how they're planning to set themselves apart.

Yes. I just got an email from MPC touting this. I’m still going to give it a try, but they will need to make me very happy very quickly if they want to keep getting my money.
That said, I’ve long thought that eliminating the newspaper was MPC’s biggest mistake. It gave curious people an opportunity to dip their toes in the water before laying down serious bucks for an unknown experience. So maybe this is their admission that a small company cannot live on what are essentially luxury items alone. Though I still expect them to go out of business. Their treatment of customers sucks hard rocks.

I'm going to give this shot. I enjoyed The Buried Puppet and the Post Mortem boxes. That being said, there are a lot of options out there right now for monthly mystery experiences so they better up their game.

They lost me with "elective hint system". That and "we embrace paper engineering". My sentiments exactly. Initially I was excited to see if this would breathe life back into our fantastic community but the concerns about "paper engineering" and the fact that this is still the MPC that shafted C&C leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Bitter, oh so bitter.
