Did you find DIANA? There are 4 letters in there that overlap other words. Wow, how did I miss that? Oh Well, I guess I wasn't on to something. So the letters are: AERAIRSDISAOR ?? Which could be rearranged OSS AIR RAID AREA But I fear I'm getting into this after you've all moved on.

I have a few more I want to try.

Dammit. I thought I was on to something... A division of the OSS called MORALE operations used to drop leaflets from planes to create panic using false propaganda. But that didn't work either. Back to the drawing board.

Back to the drawing board. I headed in that direction last night, too. I'm at that point in rearranging letters for this and the crossword where I'm pouncing on anything that seems to make sense!

Here's a thought, albeit pretty random, though I figured I'd throw it out there since it seems we're still stuck.
I was going back through the articles, and the one that jumped out to me with regard to code was Cryptic Deaths. In it, "G. Reaper" refers to the lines of code he left in a book at the site of the Somerton Man incident, and that code (if that's indeed what it was) has never been sufficiently solved despite attempts by codebreakers, government folk, etc.
G. Reaper notes that the code is "unsolvable, and that you'll go mad trying" if you attempt to crack it, so I started thinking about codes that are considered uncrackable, of which the most obvious is the one-time pad method of coding, which has historically been the hallmark of most number stations, which are a big area of personal interest to me, and one of the formats used by the NSA in creating one-time pads is code-named DIANA. I can't think that's a coincidence, since it shows up in the word search, but I don't know what the connection could be...

Now we know that we are looking for A 6 letter initialism that relates to soviet espionage. I still like this idea for the night vault answer. From moze's spreadsheet (excellent work by the way!), the message says to "root out" (find), names several suspected Russian/Soviet spies, "hark" (listen) and "initialism" and led me to two incorrect attempts based on methods used to monitor communications FWIW.

Some of us have also been contemplating the this particular clue might be for a yet-to-be unlocked daytime puzzle, and nighttime puzzle may be something else entirely.
I think our list of failed guesses is around 100 deep.

I think you're right on this Todd - something so long and involved does seem more likely to form the 32 character answer.
For the wordsearch six-letter code....still thinking!

Because taking it back to basics, the problem is called "Word Search". The description is "Find the words in the list on the right." So literally speaking, search for the words in the list (just) on the right.
It doesn't say search just the letter grid.
You can search for VRIL and of course find it on the luggage ticket...
