I rarely watch series all over again just after they finished, but with this one I actually did it twice..and I am still not at the bottom of it. It has an intensity that drew my brain and my atmosphere-loving self right in. What starts out as a simple story about a boy gone missing in a little German town, involving time travel, becomes more and more complex, intense and even metaphysical, on the story level as well as on the interpersonal one. The plot is not linear, things happen simultaneously, influence each other both ways and one is left on his own to figure things out. The plot twist about time travel is also only the tip of the iceberg. Deduction skills and the ability to pay attention to very small details is needed, but it has been a long time since I've seen a show this satisfying. Watching it the second time I realized, how much there was already alluded in the fist episode, when I still thought, that the plot was rather simple. I highly recommend it, if you like these kind of things.

I really loved this show as well! I've just finished is Zone Blanche (Black Spot) on Amazon Prime, which has the same atmosphere. Not as good as Dark, but still a good binge. The "International" shows i've watched recently are much more satisfying than the cop/doctor/other stressful jobs shows that frequent the US airwaves.

Thanks for the tip! I have not heard about zone blanche yet. Dark is also much different (and better) than many other German shows, which tend to be a little stiff.

Thanks for the tip! I have not heard about zone blanche yet. Dark is also much different (and better) than many other German shows, which tend to be a little stiff. It's a French series, where each episode has it's own case but the overarching storyline is very Twin Peak meets Dark. Ohhh speaking of French series...The Returned is very good as well! I've realized lately the shows I'm watching that i really like are because the locations are stunning. Ranking by quality, the French version of The Returned, then Fortitude followed by The Kettering Incident all have beautiful settings and atmospherics which drew me in more than the dramas - and they're pretty decent dramas.

Dark has been in my Netflix queue for a little while now. Happy to hear it's as good as it looked!
I'm a bit addicted to mystery shows that take place in foreign locales. Some of my favorites are Hinterland (Welsh; beautiful scenery and atmosphere), Hotel Beau Séjour (Dutch; intriguing mystery with some interesting twists), and Bordertown (Finnish; the mystery is pretty good, but what really draws me to it is the amazing soundtrack by Danish composers Kaae and Batz), if you want any more suggestions. Feel better soon!

Thank you lucasscooter for your inspirations! I had some rough days but feeling better now. Am half through zero blanche now, great show. :-) Can't wait to check the other ones out. What is it with small towns and mysteries? I grew up in one but there was never any sign of nothing mysterious... sigh;-)

Anyone catch season 2 of Dark yet? This show forces me to think more than any other, and I love every bit of it.

I'm about two thirds through season one of Dark and am running out of steam. Watching a series like this requires a large time commitment, which has to be repaid by the show itself. I'm just getting tired and it feels like there's no real headway being made narratively.
Besides, I can't keep track of all the characters in their various incarnations across time!

I understand how you feel about the time commitment. I've had to rewatch episodes several times in an attempt to understand all the convolutions, and I could find myself easily lost in reading up on comparisons to Nietzsche's theories and works. I think watching the English subtitled German audio has helped me keep track of characters (and of course the Netflix page dark.netflix.io/de/ ) If you can make it through, I've enjoyed the way season 2 dances around season 1; but then again time travel shows have always been my favorite!

Ended up watching through the end of season two and finished last night. I am wholly unconvinced that it was worth the time and effort.
