This is a table top game that I love, though I do have some critiques for it.
The gameboard is a top-down view of the city of H.P Lovecraft's Arkham. with other realms being represented along the edge of the board.
Players all get a character, who have starting equipment, funds, spells, and abilities.
Each turn, portals open up in Arkham, with monsters emerging through. Players have to enter the portals and progress through another realm in order to close it.
Certain conditions help awaken the Ancient One who is slumbering at the top of the board, and certain actions help keep it asleep.
The game is very hard and players often times don't win...any party member can be killed by any random monster, and there are often more monsters than players on the board.
My critique is the set-up time for the game, and the play time.
But if your friends are looking for an all-afternoon game to play with food and music, this game is amazing.

For something that I hope to be a bit shorter and more accessible, there is this game currently on Kickstarter: It's a deduction game on a town map of Arkham with a co-op and competitive mode, that seems to be a bit shorter and far less convoluted than AH. Here is a link to the first two cases for free Print and Play: www.dropbox.com/sh/cof6iiew8sq09gn/AADKJURiEkqIQlpUBpJCms7Da?dl=0I haven't played them yet but I plan to read up on them this weekend.

I picked up the first printing of arkham horror (dark board) and all the big box and small box expansions as they came out. For theme, its great. for playtime and rules finicky ness, its horrible. For the same theme and suspense but less play time try Elder Sign. Ive logged many many hours with Arkham and am at the point where i'd sell the lot to get it to someone who wanted to play it.
