I spent some time with the curio last night, attempting to extract a bit more intrigue out of this issue. I've been idly wondering why there are these blobs attached to the back of the Shigir Idol.
I'm choosing to believe, still, that there are several layers of puzzling to the issues of CNC.
Has anyone else played around with this, particularly in proximity to the lobotomy illustration on the Brain Butchers tray? I've noticed something, and am not sure what to do with it.

I was wondering what those were as well. I assumed it was Swamp muck or something because the Shigir idol was found in a bog

Here's what I noticed: the real Shigir idol is a flat rectangle. This reproduction is curved (and has those blobs on the back). The curve of the curio is the same curve as the top of the skull on the lobotomy illustration. If one lays the curio down on its side on the top of the skull, it follows the outline perfectly. The blobs fall along the same lines as the areas of the brain highlighted in the illustration. There is one part of the curio "blob" section with a pivot point, which falls directly into the die-cut in the box tray where the enamel pin was. Why? I have no idea.
The only other thing of interest here is that I found the original ice pick lobotomy illustration, and it is an identical reproduction, other than the original says "figure 4" and this version says "figure 34". A connection to the numbers on the inside box cover?
Someone more clever than me might be able to make some sense of this, or perhaps it's all just coincidence.

One thing to note is that the MPC has a history of taking real illustrations and text and, for whatever reason, subtly changing them in some way when they print them in C&C. I stopped because it was taking me forever to do, but I have a series of threads for Volume 1 that focus on all of the real-world references that they've included in C&C (90% of the Prologue issue consisted of real articles or pictures), and it was quite common to have slight modifications done on the text of, say, a real newspaper article, or have a word changed in an ad. Someone more versed in graphic design than I am could probably explain why they do this.
I'm not at all saying here that the switch from 4 to 34 isn't something to note, but just that it's not unheard of and may well be innocuous.

Agreed--not so sure that 4 to 34 is significant...but the shape of the curio MIGHT be?

I think you are on to something here although I'm not sure where to go from here. I read a lot about lobotomy on the net - horrible stuff, but it did not help with the curio. Maybe I'm missing something..

I did the same thing online and now I know more about lobotomies than I ever wanted to. I put Brain Butchers away for a few days, but I'm going to take it out again and keep playing around with this.

I just noticed: the Curio also fits neatly on the magnet head from the last box, which happens to have the same size as the head on the inlay of this box. Am I overthinking this? But this is how it has always been: You start to look EVERYWHERE

Oh, wow, that is VERY cool. I've been wondering about that magnet head. Can you overlay the magnet head onto the lobotomy head? Hmmm...!

I also just figured out this tidbit: if you put the puppet thalamus pin back into its home and turn it horizontally, the illustrated ice pick is cutting right through the strings. The lobotomy cut connections between the frontal lobe and the thalamus and so is this little gimmick doing. As a psych prof, I love that! Seems there are more and more layers here.
Other findings: young Frankenstein reference on same page as a reference to "mt Madeleine"...Madeleine Kahn? In and next to letters.
In the curator vs the editor, there's a line that says "control is the key." I wondered when I read that if it was an answer to a deeper cipher of some kind.
Also lots of references to totalitarianism...total control.
There are two per maybe three references throughout to there being no God....
I feel like there's more hidden in the articles and pictures but maybe it's time to put this one away...Ha ha
