A month or so ago, I happened across one of the Cube Escape games from the app store on my phone. It plays like your typical room escape game, where you look around the room in a point-and-click set-up, combine and use various items around the room and eventually you find a way out and you win. What sets it apart from other room escape games is its story. It tells you a story through the puzzles, which is kinda like how C&C works. It's decidedly more supernatural than C&C is, but it has similar elements of macabre and mystery.
You can either get the games on your phone or go to the Rusty Lake website and play them on there; they're all free except for two of them (I think the paid ones are really good, but you should play a free one to see if you like it). It never gets especially gory or raunchy by any means, but it does involve a lot of murder/implied suicide (there's metaphors involved, it'll make more sense in context), so... ya know, not for young'uns or anyone who's sensitive to that stuff. In any case, I highly recommend giving them a shot. I would suggest going in the order they were released, but I, personally, started with Harvey's Box and just sorta downloaded the rest of them as I saw them, so just pick one and give it a shot. My only complaint is that some of the games have a few jump scares in em, which is kinda cheesy, but I still think they're worth it.

I'm a big fan of point-and-click style games and was not disappointed by the Rusty Lake series. I will agree that it's not really for children as it is pretty dark (and pretty creepy). It's also moderately challenging with one of the games (whichever one had animals at a dinner party) having some components of doing things in the right order that were a little frustrating. I would add that the art is actually pretty good too. It's both "pretty" and gross. Nice balance.

Thanks for the recommendations! These games are a lot of fun. I have to admit I got scared a bit with the jump scares. The puzzles werent too hard are too easy. I did have a bit of trouble with Seasons near the end and had to look at the walk through. I am planning to purchase the two premium games they released as a way to support the developer with the free ones I was able to play.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just played through the first cube game, not too challenging, just a little tedious at times.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just played through the first cube game, not too challenging, just a little tedious at times. And... done. All 9 Cube Escape games completed. Some interesting puzzles and generally good fun. Some tedious bits. It is what it says, point and click, you'll get to the end one way or another.

I'm going through them right now (I'd stopped at that aggravating fly/larvae puzzle in Harvey's Box a while back because there was some technical issue I was having that made it so they weren't clickable, but coming back to it now it worked fine).
Did you check out the premium games? Rusty Lake Hotel, Rusty Lake Roots, and the just released Rusty Lake Paradise? By "premium" we're talking two dollars each, and they're very much worth it; significantly longer and more plot-heavy than Cube Escape. Hotel is great but a bit repetitive and has a couple of sections that are gross even by Rusty Lake standards. I'm going through Roots right now and utterly loving it.

Well, in terms of release date from oldest to newest, which I'm pretty sure is the order they're intended to be played in (especially once it becomes mostly from the perspective of Dale going up the elevator), it goes Seasons, Lake, Arles, Harvey's Box, Case 23, The Mill, Rusty Lake Hotel, Birthday, Theatre, Rusty Lake Roots, The Cave, Rusty Lake Paradise. All the premium ones so far are prequels and pretty much all stand alone but are great if you've played the other ones because they actually explain mysteries from some of the Cube Escapes. I'd probably start with Hotel; you'll find that if you finish it 100% i.e. get three stars on everything (and for sure read this spoiler; only a spoiler for someone totally new to the series) you'll get a code you can use to get an easter egg in Birthday in the snow globe that will explain a big mystery. Roots though is great, and Paradise has been getting rave reviews. Basically, you can't go wrong.

Finished Paradise over the weekend and to be honest was a little underwhelmed. In terms of the Rusty Lake mythos, it's awesome and explains a couple of major mysteries (well, sort of explains; this is Rusty Lake after all), but I found the environment so tiny and limited that I started to get a bit bored. Still, it ends so well, and has some very solid puzzles. I think Roots is still my favorite, though The Cave was also excellent.

But you are right, Paradise felt somewhat repetetive due to the cramped environment...

Rusty Lake has announced their first ever Kickstarter. They're releasing a new game and a companion film, and the two will apparently interact with each other:

To finally follow up on this, the Cube Escape game that was Kickstarted, Paradox, was released on Friday, and it is definitely one of their best ones. A bit easier than the last several, but still some solid puzzles and nothing particularly tedious. The cool thing about this one though is that there's a short film (little less than 20 minutes long) that ties in directly to the game. The film itself is great on its own, and the way the game and the film intertwine is really neat and unlike anything I've experienced before. You don't need the film to solve the main game, but you do need to reference the film to get secret achievements that eventually unlock some very cool stuff. Half of the game is free, and the second (and harder) half is only a couple of bucks. Also, as an aside, I'm regretting not giving more money to the Kickstarter, as they ended up integrating higher tier backers into the game in a very neat way; certainly the most inventive Kickstarter reward I've seen.
Highly recommended.

I played this on Saturday instead of doing my reading for school (oops...) and it is really great. Where I assume the incorporated the higher backers is pretty fun. Without knowing that, I still clicked through a bit just to see some of the funny things and pictures. I haven't paid for the second half yet because it was just enough of a tiny deterrent to make me say "get through the work this week and you can buy the $2 game" haha.
