It was winter of 1992. February, I believe. I was on my way home from the opening night party for Peter Pan at Fort Wayne Civic Theater, so it was probably around 1:30 AM. I was westbound on Main Street when I saw a woman walking in the street, also heading west, on my side of the road. She was wearing what appeared to be a white nightgown.
It was a cold night, and she certainly wasn't dressed for the weather. I passed her just about the time she reached the Main Street bridge. I decided I should stop and see if she needed help. Perhaps she was running from an abusive husband or looking for a loose dog or something.
I looked into my rear-view mirror and saw only empty road behind me. I drove home befuddled, fearing that perhaps she jumped into the icy water. I convinced myself, though, that it was late and I was tired. I must have imagined her. Still, for the next several months I remember looking in the newspaper to see if there were any stories about bodies recovered from the river.
I have since learned that Woman in White sightings in that part of Fort Wayne are not uncommon. There are documented sightings dating back to the 1880s. And now, at least as recently as 1992.

Thank you for sharing this, Todd I've had an experience that this reminds me of. At a previous job that required my very early arrival before daybreak, I would drive my route to work in the dark. My spouse drove with me. One morning as we drove, I saw, very clearly from the street lamps, a man walking up the road. This was very unusual looking, as he was literally on the road's pavement, dead center in the opposite lane. He was walking in that lane's direction, which was towards me as I drove steadily down my own lane. I glanced at him as I passed, wondering why he was doing that. However the moment went quickly by, and in the rear mirror, I could no longer see him on the road. I asked my spouse if they had seen the young man, and they replied in the affirmative. We had both seen him. My suspicions of a ghost were confirmed a few days later when we saw him again, on the same bit of road, traveling the same direction. Since that time we have seen him more than a dozen times. It was like he was in an infinite loop, walking that same bit of road over and over, only to start again. We don't live there anymore, but I bet that man is still there, walking.
