Wow, you're really thinking The Key -- that is always just out of reach -- is more than clever marketing?

Wow, you're really thinking The Key -- that is always just out of reach -- is more than clever marketing? Well, I would love to see what they make of it if that goal was reached. "Just out of reach" is an awfully small target. Although at this point it would take a miracle.

Email announcement from The Curator:
"Finally, now that we have seen your enthusiasm for Filigree in Shadow, we have now added new stretch goals: PAPERCRAFT, THE COIN, and something those of you who followed The Century Beast may remember: A KEY. These unlock at $600,000, $750,000 and $1,500,000 respectively. Whilst these goals are lofty, I do believe they are attainable, and I look forward to seeing where this story takes us all."
Unobtanium indeed! We will NEVER see the key.

As I mentioned in another thread, the Kickstarter shot up and then flat-lined. Frankly, even the $450K stretch goal is questionable.

But it might be sprinlkes on the non-existant sundae we didn't have if the people who still don't have the personal note got to watch other people get the key.

What does anyone make of the references to the Crosley company delivering machines to their office?

Well, Crosley made both cars and radios. The reference is likely to a spirit radio of some sort. However Crosley didn't make radios until the 1920s, which is not the time line of "Filigree in Shadow." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powel_Crosley,_Jr.#Crosley_Radios

The constant cracks about how it's the intern's hair will make it far less creepy, in my humblest of opinions. I know, none of us would truly believe the artifact to be what it portends to be. But, I would enjoy the illusion more without the peek behind the curtain beforehand. Actually, only one commenter suggested that the hair of the interns would be used for the Experience. The Curator only mentioned shaving the interns once, "as a show of solidarity". Looks like it's no longer solidarity, according to the latest update the hair of the experience shall be shorn from the heads of poorly paid (or perhaps unpaid) college students. Woe unto you who receive this hair. On the other hand, you may be able to resell it to labs experimenting with new assays to detect the presence of substances of questionable legality.

I believe the machines are there for the interns. See attached for reference.

Well, Filigree reached $300,000 a lot faster than we reached $200,000. I admit to being surprised as I was ready to agree with Jackalope about it flat-lining. I do think they are in an unenviable position though. It's is pretty much impossible to keep a company small enough for the personal touch to not be blatantly fake, and yet large enough to justify a stretch goal of $1,500,000 (for the much spoken of Key). And no matter what you do, there will always be someone who is disappointed that you didn't do something else entirely.

And no matter what you do, there will always be someone who is disappointed that you didn't do something else entirely. Too true! That goes double for it the key was actually unlocked - there is simply no way to satisfy everyones expectations as to its purpose. That sort of thing can be liberating though.

I think it shot up faster initially because they had a larger initial pool of potential customers -- they could quickly reach everyone who kicked in for The Century Beast. Clearly, enough were happy with the experience to try again... or at least based on the comments here, not-quite-happy but hopeful the next experience will be better. With more than two weeks left I think there is a reasonable, but not guaranteed, shot of hitting the next stretch goal. Anything beyond that I would say is highly doubtful.

My three-part series on Boing Boing probably helped. Many tens of thousands of views will inevitably lead to some folks clicking through and buying.
