Happy Monday, friend!
After the Incident with the wax cylinders, we wanted to ease back a little bit and dive a little bit into another familiar story. Stories like Hansel and Gretel are often lumped in with tales like Little Red Riding Hood as fairy tales with a moral bent. Of course, the morality in Hansel and Gretel is pretty foggy, and there can be quite a discussion about where its origins may truly lie, a discussion that the Librarians of Childhood Studies, Beginnings, and Sex and Death have in a recent episode of Borrowings.
I’ve been pretty emotional since a recent review of Borrowings kindly said “it's like delving into a dusty leather bound book for your ears.” If you’ve been listening to and enjoying the podcast, please take a moment to review it in your Podcast app of choice. If you’re not listening, you’re missing a lot about what goes on here.
The Incident has left the Library unusually quiet, even for us, so there’s been an increase in Colophauna activity, with shushers wandering about in what I’m told are record numbers. I’ve mentioned the dangers of the Library before, and shushers on the hunt are always something to be cautious of.
The call of the shusher is a low sibilance, a “shhhhhh” sound. If one detects the presence of this colophon, it is recommended to lower your voices, muffle your steps and make as little noise as possible. Extended periods of loud sound have been known to provoke a rage state, the descriptions of which are… unpleasant.
Speaking about shushers, our founding Cardholder Kits include a tee shirt that features this particular pest. Included in both The Essential Cardholder and The Compleat Cardholder, it provides a dire warning about the dangers inherent in libraries of all kinds. These are only available until the end of November, so please don’t wait!
Only Molly knows about this, but I’ve made a Story available for preorder. There are… mechanisms that keep things in the Library, but I think I’ve figured out a way to safely share with you A Feather In Dust.
We’re about to record another podcast, so I have to run. I’ll write again soon, though, I promise.
Best,
Alice
