Since we're only three episodes into Borrowings and not really into the thick of Cardholder kits or anything, I thought I'd throw this out there, since it's been on my mind. (Given the archiving of the pre-launch discussion, I'm spoiler-ing everything below to be safe.)
Italo Calvino, the author previously noted here, was known to be a member of the Oulipo style of writing, which, if you're not familiar, was a mid-20th century movement that focused on literature built around certain types of arbitrary limitations.
From a puzzle standpoint, though, Oulipo was known for certain types of linguistic tricks - known as 'constraints' - and I'm wondering if those will somehow play a part in the codes/puzzles/whatever we get from TBL on that front. For example, one was called a lipogram, which was writing that deliberately excluded certain letters. Another was N+7, in which you'd replace every noun in a text with the seventh noun after it in a specific edition of a dictionary. The Oulipo school defined their movement roughly as "the seeking of new structures and patterns which can be used by writers however they prefer."
I don't have any insights yet into how this might play into things, but I did find it interesting that the one author we've been given was a part of this movement that very deliberately used certain stylistic tricks that could be used to create puzzles.
diggitydoodog: I've had dubious documents for 2 years now and finally went to work on it. Would anyone on here be willing to PM me the answer or post it in a spoiler so I can check the solution?
