Considering the fact that there was a message hidden on the previous issue's box, maybe there is one here as well? I have not found anything as of right now, but I thought this might be a good place to discuss.

A book cipher seems the most obvious, but which book?
I've tried Chapter/Verse/Word of the Gospel of Luke (due to the Risen! tie-in and Volume 1).
I've also tried Chapter/Paragraph/Word of the two books the Editor recommended in Gods of Madness, The Greatest Shows on Earth: A History of the Circus and Madame Tussaud: A Life in Wax.
I confess though that I haven't even read the whole issue yet so I am probably putting the cart before the horse.

My only hesitation with it being a book cipher, besides it not working anywhere obvious within the issue or the curios, is that the last message was self contained i.e. nothing else was needed besides the numbers themselves. However, there is a book recommended by The Editor near the end of the issue.

I feel it it were a book cipher then some of the last numbers would be larger. and yes, the lobotomy story is recommended...but not something I'm going to buy and read. EEEEWWWW. Yuck.

My issue with it being a book cipher is that 3-2-1 is used twice, and I've rarely seen a book cipher use the same sequence of digits to represent the same word twice.
So far I'm not coming up with any other good ideas ciphers that use three digits from 1 to 8.

could the book cipher be for the newspaper itself? (I don't have the bits and pieces in front of me at the moment - but I'm going to be pulling them off the shelf as soon as I get home )

My issue with it being a book cipher is that 3-2-1 is used twice I saw that too - it is actually 3-1-2 twice. My thought was a cipher for the cards themselves (one for each card - line, word, letter) which works but doesn't give anything that makes sense. could the book cipher be for the newspaper itself? (I don't have the bits and pieces in front of me at the moment - but I'm going to be pulling them off the shelf as soon as I get home ) Doesn't work that I can tell.

Yeah, I've tried many, many things with no luck. The method of Line, Word, Letter that ejs76 tried does spell out a word for the first four, but then the last four are gibberish.

frustration level is high right now. I've spent quite a few hours trying all kinds ciphers to decode and haven't had any luck. Probably, as usual, over thinking the complexity. I'm putting this one to the side and moving on.

So, a rather busy 2017 has kept me from the first two issues of Volume 4 until this week. I've moved on to Brain Butchers and immediately got sucked into the numbers inside the front cover of this box as well.
Like the rest of you, so far, not much success in cracking the code. However, I went back to the July 20 email from the Curator promoting Brain Butchers and at the bottom of the email was the following:
Transposed from scratches from inside a by Intern 177 Potential Language [REDACTED] Cipher: Rosetta 2 How do you feel? Dizzy
Has anyone looked into "Rosetta 2" as a possible cipher? I'm not sure what it might or might not mean.

My husband and I have now spent way too much time trying to figure this one out. I have two Sunday New York Times now sitting unread, with crossword puzzles untouched. I need to move on...
But, I can't, yet. I've hit a ton of dead ends. All I know to be true: there are 8 cards. Each card has 3 sections. The digits are in pairs of three, with no digit higher than 8. Each card has three sections. 1 is used most frequently, 7 is never used; 6 is used once; 8 is used twice. 3-1-2 is repeated twice--does that equal a double letter, like n, or t, in a word or phrase?
Is this driving anyone else crazy?

Is this driving anyone else crazy? We've all given up on it for now. It doesn't fit into any obvious (and some not obvious) ciphers, and it doesn't cleanly fit with anything in the issue. It's also worth noting that the hidden messages in Brain Butchers are not in the same place as Gods of Madness, so it's quite possible that these aren't hiding anything. But yes, this still bothers me, as they don't feel random (especially with the repeated 3-1-2), and the digits just happen to go up to the number of cards. Feel free to keep working on it, but I think for now, without more info or some giant revelation that's eluded all of us for weeks, that you're safe to move onto the crosswords.

Perhaps I am the only puzzler who is still being driven mad by this but I am willing to throw out every idea I have and perhaps one will stick.
What if these are different times? (I got this idea from reading today's message from the Curator).
I believe there are several versions of a clock cipher. When I'm not at work, I'm going to pursue this idea a bit more but wanted to share in case it's of interest.

I have tried a great number of ciphers and spent hours and hours and come up with nothing.
It could be that we need a key to unlock this....or it could be that there is no hidden code on the box at all and MPC is just messing with our minds (would not surprise me since the title of the issue is Brain Butchers).

The first thing though that came to my mind was that it reminded me of a round vault lock, turning the numbers in different directions. Than I thought of a clock, too but thats as far as I've gotten. Maybe we really need something more. Maybe there will be some kind of key to this.
