While digging to one of the curated Experiences by The Mysterious Package Company recently, I found to my great joy and excitement that the central location described in some of the accompanying documents is located in Germany. Suffice to say, further enhancing a tactile Experience by visiting the place where the climactic event of the story is said to have taken place is something I cannot easily pass up. Near Heidelberg, Germany, close to the ruins of a former monastery, there is an open air theatre. Built during the Third Reich for propaganda purposes, the site does now occasionally host open-air concerts. But once a year, on April 30th, something between 10 and 15.000 people gather at the Thingstätte to celebrate Walpurgisnacht, the Witches' Night. There is no official event promoter, no booked musical act and no additional infrastructure. Nevertheless, the event is known as the largest inofficial celebration in Heidelberg. chrisu has expressed interest in going, too, so we decided to put this out there and see if we cannot make this a small meetup between members of the Mysterious Package Company. While I realise that members from Germany are few and far between, and we are not exactly around the corner from everyone else, we at least had to try! I am looking forward to see some of you there! Well, I will try to be there. It would be nice to chat with some fellow minded people. Hopefully I will be able to meet some of you there! So who else is in on this?

August 30th? Isn't it April 30th? I've just been checking how far Heidelberg is from my work's main office in Eschborn...

So, what's accommodation like in Heidelberg around the end of April??? Heidelberg Heidelberg is not all that big a city, it might be worth booking a hotel or hostel now. I made a booking via HRS at Hotel Krokodil - which could, in the unlikely case this all falls apart - be cancelled without a cancellation fee. I did book for the whole weekend through May 1st, since I have never been to Heidelberg and there are a couple other sights I will likely not be able to see before.

I am considering paying the monastery and the Thingstätte a short visit on sunday; I would very much like to look around the place when it is not overrun by revelers. If I do so, I will of course keep you in the loop! Heidelberg seems to be rich in curiosities we might consider for our meetup. This here caught my eye, since it fits very well with the current theme of Curios & Conundrums: The Prinzhorn Collection at the Atlas ObscuraThe Thingstätte does have its own entry, of course: Thingstätte Heidelberg at Atlas Obscura

I've switched my double room at Hotel Krokodil for a single at Hotelo. This does not make much of a difference, though. I have booked Friday April 27th to Tuesday May 1st, hoping to see a bit more of Heidelberg this time around. Todd, would you be so kind and move this discussion to the Unspecific MPC Discussion folder of the forums? Since the GenCon meetups have been discussed there, I feel this would be a better fit. And it will make us harder to track for outsiders.

It has been a while since we have talked about this, and with Walpurgisnacht fast approaching, I am afraid I bring nothing but bad news.
Apparently, the Walpurgisnacht celebration at the Thingstätte has been prohibited by the city of Heidelberg. This has probably been a long time coming, as the event had never been formally permitted to begin with, and with one person seriously hurt last year - apparently a drunk man fell off the path - and two smaller forest fires, the city decided to ban the event and fence off the Thingstätte during the night of April 30th.
I would kick myself in the pants, if I could! I wish I had ordered the Demon Jar when it first came out, alas...
Did anyone else already make plans for that date that are now in need of amending?
