Chrisu, I'm sorry to hear you can't get Empty Faces. I think the reason might be but not positive, that at least one of the items can't be sent to your area. That could be the problem. I hope later on they will be able to if the item is the reason their not sending it there. I would be interested to know what this item might be.

They put drugs in the package? That's their move to make these experiences sell? 😆

Could you ask them to leave that organic item out and just send a description and/or photo of it ? I’m not sure the item itself is actually needed for anything except the knowledge of what it is. I assume it was added for effect more than anything else. If you did need it for some odd reason, I’m sure it would be easy to purchase about where you are or online. It’s not unique like the pendant.

I tried to contact them on several occasions. They always answered with cryptic phrases like: we have to check if that's viable. Or:If that changes we'll let you know. So I don't think it is about one item. It's more a general attitude. They send a hidden blade overseas in one of the first HAK mailings. Just saying...

Oh and yes, at five boxes to complete then it's much less of a risk than 12 with CosyKiller or even undefined with Letters From Dead People. I could be wrong, but I remember signing up for Hunt a Killer when they said each case was 4 boxes. They're 8 now. I'm not holding EF to 5 boxes. I'm also struggling to find $25 worth of investment in this box, and I'm skeptical about $125 for the full story, but it's certainly an improvement over HaK. If people find EF level of trinketry and puzzling appealing, I strongly recommend the Mystery Experiences Company, which is better in both.

If people find EF level of trinketry and puzzling appealing, I strongly recommend the Mystery Experiences Company, which is better in both. To clarify just a bit, the first season of HaK is 8 boxes, and the second and third are six. In the Inventory and Recaps section of EF, they list only five boxes; I'm sure they have the whole narrative mapped out, so I'd be very surprised if they change that number. I would also say that at least based on Seasons 1 and 2, HaK's premium experiences are significantly better than their main seasons except for 1968, which I think is their one premium misfire. In fact, two of their premium experiences, 1934 (no longer available) and 1973 are in my absolute top tier boxes that I've ever received from one of these companies. Personally, I think with the website included, I'm happy with EF value-wise even though the puzzles weren't challenging. I've long been curious about MEC, but there are two things that turn me off. One is that there have just been so many previous boxes and experiences that are no longer available, and even though each box is standalone, it seems to be one huge universe with lots of interconnectedness, so it seems next to impossible to just jump in (I'm very much a completist when it comes to narratives). The other is that many people here on the forums from before I got involved were very into MEC but eventually grew disillusioned with the quality of the puzzles and the overall narrative and quit. This was I think at least a year ago now, so I wonder if they've found their footing again. What about them do you find so appealing?

I didn't like MEC. The story is overarching and I felt that I was hampered by not having access to earlier boxes. Plus their "artifacts", the ones I got at least, all seemed to be paper items, like drink coasters, or newspapers obviously printed specifically for the box involved. I also bought a premium box and was sadly disappointed with the whole thing. That's when I unsubscribed.

Unfortunately the puzzles were ... sub par... and that's me using nice words.

This was I think at least a year ago now, so I wonder if they've found their footing again. What about them do you find so appealing? You've convinced me to take a second look at HaK's premium experiences before forking over the $250. I was concerned about the bang-for-buck value, since HaK and now EF seem a little short, but you're not the first to recommend their premium experiences. To be clear, I wasn't a huge fan of MEC. The content reminded me a lot of this first EF box - simple puzzles, good story, interesting and substantial items. I only subscribed for MEC for 3 boxes maybe a year ago before canceling, maybe I happened to beat the downturn, because I found C&C and haven't (until recently) looked back. If you liked EF for these reasons, you should at least give MEC a try. It is interesting that each box is set in the same universe, but I found the overarching narrative or interconnectedness pretty ephemeral, it certainly wasn't necessary to understand it to enjoy the boxes.

OK, thanks. I'm still on the fence about MEC, especially because of how many other subscription box experiences that I do, but I may check it out. I more liked EF in comparison to HaK, but it's far from my favorite subscription box that I do (so far; hard to judge an experience on only one box).
I really think 1973 is awesome, though the "mystery" part of it isn't the greatest (it's fairly clear who the killer is early on). But the quality of the items and the extensive amount of online content is really impressive, and there are some great surprises if you want to find everything. I wear the T-shirt from it on a regular basis and get big compliments about it, and the vinyl is such a cool item to display. I think 1934 remains the single most impressive unboxing experience I've had with any company, though I also understand why they discontinued it, as they likely lost money given how many big and intricate items there were in that. I think their premium experiences in general are what really live up to the "Hunt A Killer" name; the main boxes are more a psychological journey into the mind of a killer, whereas the premium experiences are truly about solving a mystery and finding a killer from a list of suspects.

I was also disappointed with MEC and finally cancelled. I had it going for almost a year. The first couple boxes I received had actual items. The last 3-4 were just paper items and a couple really cheap trinkets, nothing like what they used to have. The mysteries were just too easy for us. I also ordered a premium box from MEC for Christmas, but feel there just was not enough in there to justify the amount I paid. I switched over to Dispatch and Empty Faces for now. Dispatch is awesome! Empty Faces did not take me too long for the first box, but intro boxes are usually that way. Waiting to see what box 2 brings. I like the amount of work put into the online content.
