Yeah, you've both convinced me to cancel my pledge. I had forgotten about the frivolous news quotes, and you're right, the whole thing smacks of boasting and preening, which isn't what you want to see. Also, I'm honestly concerned about their relative lack of English writing skills, which would deeply concern me with any writing-based puzzles and online content. I sincerely hope this turns out to be super successful and leads to bigger and better things from them, but there are enough red flags that I think I'm going to pass for now. I canceled my pledge, too. Too many red flags as you already said. And the items in the Enigma box do look like cheap toys. That's a total no-no for immersion. At least for me.

I also cancelled mine last night! I know I'd expressed concerns over it in the past, but finally these have built into more disquiet - I tweeted one of the supposed creators about the box to ask about it, got no reply....just another thing that makes me suspicious.

Hmm I am on the fence here. Could I ask, the reason you guys cancelled is because they might do a non-deliverance or you feel they will deliver but just that the puzzles and products are of a low quality and standard?

Hmm I am on the fence here. Could I ask, the reason you guys cancelled is because they might do a non-deliverance or you feel they will deliver but just that the puzzles and products are of a low quality and standard? The biggest issue is that it seems very difficult to know if we can trust the creators or not. There's a huge amount of hyperbole in the description of the product, and there's very little evidence or proof that the creators really know what they're doing (they were very hesitant at first about revealing who they were, and if you read back in this thread, craigrj did some excellent sleuthing that revealed that their "company" seemed like a kid got some money from his parents and founded a company, and that London as a location for the company seemed arbitrary and it was more likely that the creators were based in Spain). Chrisu also brings up a good point that the items look very simple and arts and craftsy in a way that doesn't inspire much confidence. I for one am concerned both about the huge claims being made given the relatively low price and also about how the writing and overall immersion factor is really subpar. The whole campaign is confusing, with press quotes supposedly being about the project but actually being weirdly used to advance the game's "lore" and there are odd pieces of writing throughout. The whole thing seems muddled and really hard to trust. It's more of a feel than anything given that it's always hard to fully trust anything on Kickstarter (I've certainly lost money several times on Kickstarter from campaigns that ended up going nowhere), but given that this kind of thing is right up my alley, I've never been more ambivalent about backing a Kickstarter campaign, and I'm trusting my instincts with this one. I truly hope that I'm proven wrong and that it turns out to be a big success.

Hmmm That sounds about right. I shall cancel my pledge as well, I feel more confident in the money for Enigma Box investing into Simulacra Games. I do hope that this project works as well, and if it is, I hope that we can still get it at some other place, be it retail or via their store

I've been thinking about this during the whole campaign. Every time I look at it, at first I'm all for it. But the more I look, the more I realize it seems to be heavily based on Internet content. I have a bad track record with technological devices. While I was still on active duty I once walked into an operations center where we had been assured the computers had never gone offline, and in fact could not go offline. As soon as I walked into the room, every computer screen went dark. And stayed that way. They had to contact the backup operations center and have them take over, something that had never been done except as a test. This was not the only instance. My track record with electronic cash registers is abysmal. A part of me really wants this to be as great as they say the t is. But another part keeps telling me I'll never get my money's worth out of it. Sigh. I'm still tempted though.

And no, I'm not telling you what company it is, just in case....

I am glad I rechecked this forum. I have this one "saved" on my kickstarter page and have gone back and forth with it. I guess I plan on sticking with my Simulacra Games and The Forgotten Tomb.

I have become the proverbial "cat lady". I'm so very much working on getting there, too. "The world can always need another tiger."

Just FYI, in case anyone is interested. The kickstarter campaign seems to have been funded successfully. It still may or may not be produced, but a successful campaign is a step in the right direction in my opinion. If anyone feels they made a mistake by backing out, you can still get one it seems. Go to the kickstarter page and click the big blue button that says "Get Enigma Box".
This is not a recommendation or an endorsement. Many valid questions have been raised about this project. So buyer beware.

I got a notification that it's here, and I'll be picking it up after work. Surprisingly, they shipped it two-day from Spain, which has to easily be over a hundred dollars. At any rate, I'll report back tomorrow with an update!
