My two cats Little Bit and Little Miss in the spirit photo. That's really funny. They look so engaged, as if they were wandering around and came across these odd people..........

I'm intrigued by the article excerpts surrounding the Mad Magician's Mansion article (keeping the full title abbreviated for story/spoiler reasons). While it seems clear based on the garden diary that this was written on January 19th, 1897, the article excerpts seem to refer to disasters from different time periods. The article above the main one seems to refer to this event: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapekar_brothers#The_shooting_of_Randbased on the name Lieutenant Ayerst and the context of the excerpt. Then the article to the right of the cigar ad seems to refer to a fire at Barnum's Circus in Bridgeport, which could be this: www.gendisasters.com/connecticut/15415/bridgeport-ct-barnum-039s-circus-fire-nov-1887The other articles either seem more straightforward (like about the Malawi football team starting up) or simply have way too little content to be able to tell clearly what they are.

The MPC does have a habit of hiding things in plain sight, and using misdirection to urge your eyes to peer elsewhere.

So, is that one envelope and the framed Spirit Photo the entirety of the Seance Add On? Does anyone remember how much the experience was without it? I seem to recall a near $300 extra price, which would be kind of frightening, but not in a seance or ghosty way.

The seance was priced at $666. The bespoke seance was priced at $999. Seance description: "Everything from the FILIGREE IN SHADOW level, plus an additional customized side-story about The Seance. The personalizations include the insertion of one person of your choice into a SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPH." Bespoke seance description: "Everything in THE SEANCE level, plus you provide guidance (colour selection and styles) for a custom paint job on your artifact. Also receive a handsome display stand."

To be fair, those are CAD prices. For USD, it was $273 for the base Experience and $513 for the Experience and The Seance, so not quite as much as the base Experience, but very close.

To be fair, those are CAD prices. Amusing tidbit here: Since I started my journey with the Mysterious Package Company with The Century Beast - which, as a kickstarter Experience, I was also charged Canadian Dollars for - I kept assuming for about a year that they, being based in Canada, would also charge Canadian Dollars for the purchases I was making directly from their website were also in Canadian Dollars. Imagine my surprise...

... when they realized they could be making a lot more money by putting the prices in US dollars.

And thank you, professor, for your good memory (or good sense to make a note somewhere). When I look at what the price of all of the previous experiences, none cost as much (save The Century Beast) as the Seance Add On. It doesn't quite seem worth it.

When I look at what the price of all of the previous experiences, none cost as much (save The Century Beast) as the Seance Add On. It doesn't quite seem worth it. I mentioned this back when the add-on was first announced, but I suspect they may have overpriced this to intentionally dissuade too many people from doing it, perhaps because the spirit photo customization was time-consuming and costly. Indeed, they only got about sixty-five people to do it, about 10% of the backers. I know that if it had been say $100 or even $150 I would have probably gone for it, but to pay almost the entire cost of the base Experience for one mailing, even with something as cool as the Spirit Photo, seemed to be way too much. Now that I know it has a bunch of tangible items in it, like the cigar case, it seems more worth it but still very, very pricey. I do somewhat regret not getting it now.

The spirit photo is nice (it's the artifact for the one-mailing experience), but it doesn't look nearly old enough for the period in which it was supposed to have been taken. The frame and mat are not distressed nearly enough. I've seen real spirit photos from the period and they're all pretty beaten up.
My wife is the art director for the magazine we publish, so I know exactly what is required to produce a photograph like this. It's not difficult with Photoshop and a decent printer, and should not take more than an hour or so to doctor the photo.

Having seen the two spirit photo examples we were presented in this thread, I have to agree. The age weathering and distressing is not very convincing, and to be honest, I wasn't impressed by the manipulation of the subjects inserted into the photos, particularly the resizing of them. I still feel that the seance add on was overpriced, and while I don't regret my decision to pass on it, I would love to have that cigarette case.
