And this might be a non-starter, but I can't shake the feeling that Henry may have been molesting or otherwise abusing the girl, perhaps while wearing the goblin mask. That would be a particularly dark turn (and perhaps the one that some have hinted at) and certainly speak to a different sort of monster. I'm all about the accidental poisoning, but I doubt a Canadian company would willingly and knowingly delve into child abuse with an "experience" that can be sent by an unsuspecting giver to an even more unsuspecting recipient. I can see the lawsuit already. But you are welcome to your interpretation of your own experience.

I don't think it's a mask on that mantel. Even allowing for them standing a couple feet in front of the fireplace, I don't see that as being large enough to cover either of their faces. I think it's just a small carved figure.

After posting that and thinking on it, my mind went where yours did. The business implications/ramifications of that moved my mind moved a bit away from that initial thought. Child abuse = not great for business.
I've been listening to too much Lore and Black Tapes Podcast.

I was a child, not a toddler but before puberty. My mother sent me to the basement (finished) to tell my father lunch was ready. My mother was the sports fan in the family. My father liked old movies, and black and white were the best. There was a TV in the basement, and after I gave the message to my father I stood there watching to see what movie was on. I learned my love of old movies from my dad. A man was poking in a fireplace with a fireplace poker. Slowly I noticed a hand resting on a log in the fireplace. Yech, I thought, he burned a body in the fireplace!? Then the fingers of the hand moved. And slowly it crawled out of the fireplace. Just the hand. As the hand reached up to touch the man's knee, I positively fled upstairs. Soon after that we moved to South Korea, which at the time was still obviously damaged by war, with bomb craters and destroyed buildings pretty much everywhere. South Korea is an old country, and the hand followed me there. I've never been able to get rid of it. It hides in dark corners, especially dark stairwells. Ready to reach out for me. I've never watched that movie. I'm pretty sure I know which one it is, but I refuse to watch it. Dr. Terrors House of Horrors. The episode starring Christopher Lee.

I always thought it was "The Beast with Five Fingers" with Peter Lorre. But I would have to watch both to be sure which it was. And I won't be doing that anytime soon. It was a real shocker to me at the time. And then moving to Korea so soon after, with their own horrifying legends, just seemed to cement it in my mind. Not to mention two older sisters always willing to drive me to tears if they could.

In Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, Christopher Lee throws the disembodied hand into a lit fireplace. The hand burns while the fingers are moving. I don't remember if you see it crawling out of the fireplace. But the hand does keep coming back like all disembodied hands must!
I haven't seen The Beast with Five Fingers in many years, but it was great.

If Sir Christopher is in it, it must be the superior movie.

For anyone still trying to solve the cipher... The Physician's guide page Is a good place to start. It's fairly easy to see word breaks, feature many words with the two given letters, and has one word that should look fairly familiar if you've done the reading

I did it, I did it!
Is it time yet to talk about who is writing these things?

I did it, I did it! Is it time yet to talk about who is writing these things? I have started to wonder about that. If I remember correctly, there was code on both the forfeiture and on the deed from the doctor purchasing the house. So someone knowledgeable of the code was around to write on both the first and second set of documents.

So someone knowledgeable of the code was around to write on both the first and second set of documents.

I can think of three possible sets of circumstances that would enable someone to alter all the document containing the code, although the first one might be easily disproven. Someone at Millennial Dominion could write on the letters before forwarding them; I am not sure if there was code on the letter that was still sealed though. So far, Lizzy seems to be the only person who was around for both periods of time. Could thecipher be something an especially bright child could make up? Since at least one of the messages seems to possibly refer to the supernatural entity, could there be two of them? One benign, one malevolent? A protector of sorts, and a tormentor?

Speaking of rabbit holes, upon reading Dr. Elliot's notes regarding Beth did anyone notice that if you look at the historic moon phases how many of these visits fell on or very close to a full moon! A half-dozen at least. Eerie!

I did it, I did it! Is it time yet to talk about who is writing these things? My take is it's... A second personality/possession of either Lizzie or her father. More than likely her father.
He's been hiding in the walls after the house got repossessed, and he watches Lizzie through a two-way mirror. That's why the goblin appears during her visits.
