Hello All,
So I am in the process of subscribing to C & C for the first time, but I am confused because this forum says that the next issue (clockwork mutineers) is volume 3, but the MPC website doesn't seem to offer the brain butcher issue (volume 2), only the gods of madness issue (volume 3). Is there a way to get volume 2? Or is it that big of a deal?
Thank you! Maggie

There is usually a gap from the date of initial release to when they make it available for "catch-up"

Do you need the previous ones to understand the subsequent ones?
Sorry if that's a dumb question, I have no idea how this works haha.
Thank you for replying so quickly!

They use to be connected from issue to issue in a Volume. But MPC now states that each box is "stand alone" so that you don't need the other volumes to understand or solve puzzles.

Cool, thanks!
Just out of curiousity, do you think that they were better when they were connected?

Do you need the previous ones to understand the subsequent ones? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I have no idea how this works haha. Thank you for replying so quickly! Let me see if I can clarify. In previous years, a Volume was considered one year's worth of issues, and there were four issues in a given year. Also in previous years/Volumes, each and every issue was indeed required to be able to understand and work on the puzzles in the overall Volume, and there was a consistent story being told throughout each Volume. In fact, Volumes 1 and 2, while technically separate, ended up telling one coherent story across both Volumes and there were puzzles in the last issue of Volume 2 that required you to go back to Volume 1! Similarly, last year's Volume, Volume 3, contained an extremely intricate series of puzzles that built and played off of each other, and often puzzles that you had no idea were related to each other would suddenly reveal a connection needed to solve a later puzzle. This year, C&C has undergone a major change. The MPC isn't even calling this year's collection of issues a Volume, but instead, considers them all to be stand-alone issues. Therefore, you do not need previous issues to be able to solve puzzles, and there's no over-arching story. Also, there is no need to have Volumes 1-3 to understand anything from this year's collection of issues. However, knowing the MPC, there's always a chance that there will be hidden connections between things in the issues this year; we'll just have to wait and see. But I wouldn't worry at all about starting with Clockwork Mutineers, and it's quite likely that they'll make Brain Butchers available for individual purchase like they've made Gods of Madness available. I hope that helps!

Great, thanks!
Do you think the change has taken away form the experience at all?

Great, thanks! Do you think the change has taken away form the experience at all? Well, there is a LOT of discussion about this here, and I don't want to speak for anyone else. In my opinion, yes, it's taken quite a bit away from the experience, especially because the puzzles have become much easier and more straightforward. Part of the fun of previous Volumes was both the great challenge associated with solving the puzzles and also discovering hidden connections between them. Not having an overarching story takes away from feeling personally involved in the experience, and not having the puzzles connect to each other and having them be simple and straightforward makes solving them feel more like just something casual to do rather than something to debate and, well, puzzle over for months on end. However, we've recently been discovering hidden things in each issue released this year that makes us think there may be more to these issues than meets the eye, so we'll have to see.

Many people seem to love the new format. Many long for the days of yore. If you'd like to see for yourself, there's a hidden option on the MPC site to buy Volume 3 in its entirety. And everyone I've spoken to who purchased from this link also got the newspapers for Volumes 1 and 2. www.mysteriouspackage.com/products/cc-catchup-3
