Just received this. Suspicions confirmed. Their not-so-clear email on the 29th was indeed an underhanded way of "changing their terms". I find it strange that in their reply email, they did not address the fact that NOTHING was changed on the web site itself, and the web site still said I had to opt in! Pretty shady if you ask me. Copy of the email I just received below:
Greetings [NAME],
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us regarding your subscription. There has indeed been a change in this matter. I deeply apologize for any confusion this may have caused! Please know that we would never charge our beloved members without notifying them first. When the change was made an email inviting our C&C subscribers to opt out, as opposed to opt in, was promptly sent on June 29th. We then waited a few weeks prior to completing the charge.
Regardless, I have gone ahead and cancelled your subscription and of course refunded the charge ($34.99) to your credit card. The transaction should appear in your account over the next few days. Once again [NAME], I am terribly sorry for any consternation this may have caused you. Should you have any further questions, comments, or concerns, one of our concierges would be delighted to help.

I was also charged without opting in, and had to request a refund.
