Hey everyone. I'm kinda new here but I've definitely been taking a liking to C&C and all the intricate puzzles and interesting stories that we're all so fond of. I'm sure some people are still waiting on their delivery and have yet to even tackle the puzzles, but a good portion of people do have it by the poll in the issue 1 thread.
For everyone who has been working on it...what do you all think of MPC implementing the codex? Personally I am not a fan of the idea. I think the intention is nice, but I think it defeats a lot of the cooperative fun of C&C. I came to the game late (at the very end of volume 3) so while I was going through the back issues, I was referencing a lot of the threads here and I just was so excited by all the cooperation and helping each other along in the puzzles. And before volume 3s end when there was the sitting room (which I never got to see) that sounded like it was even more fun. I like the idea of working on all this stuff together and building a community around it.
Now with the codex, they hand the answers to you on a silver platter (if you want them) and kinda defeat some of the mystery by making it so easy to get the answers. I did reference some of the "hints" in the codex to help get me on the right path, but such things as the ability to reveal letters on "rosswor" and "the odds are stacked against me" I feel are too much of a give away. Then there is the section that just gives you all the answers.
Anyway..I'm just rambling, but I thought this was a really new and interesting aspect of C&C and I haven't seen a forum post about it yet. What is everyone's opinions?
Cheers!

I have not yet received the current issue, but I will probably to ignore this entirely. If I need a nudge, I am confident that might receive one from the good people around the chatroom.

I'm going to take the position that it's to soon to tell. This may be an effort to make the C&C friendlier to a larger audience and if that means more profit for the Company and thus more C&C then I'll begrudgingly accept it. We also don't know yet the extent all the puzzles or other twists involved in this issue or Volume 4 as a whole and there may end up being a lot of content not included in the codex. As an experiment I went and started clicking through every spoiler on the two puzzles I had already solved and I found that while I could click through all of them on the first when I went to do the same for the second the redacted sections wouldn't respond - this may be an issue with the mobile formatting of the site as I was using my phone or the site may be logging IP's to lock you out of hints for X amount of time. That being said I was still able to copy and paste the redacted text to a notepad and see it .

I'm not a huge fan of it. My hope is that they plan on using it to get the general public started, and give them the base they need in order to start working on the subsequent layers of puzzles. If they choose to use it of course.

The Codex raises a number of issues, including the future of the Vault (if there even is a Vault anymore). The puzzle/metapuzzle combo used in Volume 3 won't work any longer as the solutions are available to all who can click.
Prior to this issue, the rule of the C&C Community, as originally requested by the Curator himself, was to never give the actual answers. This forum will continue to operate under that guideline.
On the other hand, the Codex solutions are also a bit like the answers in the back of a math book. In my opinion, the puzzle isn't truly solved until you show your work. Using the Codex, you don't know what the Word Search words are. Using the Codex, you don't know which synopses belong to which titles.
My personal feelings, if the Editor is insistent on providing a place for us to look up the puzzle solutions, would be a delay of at least a month from shipping before the actual solutions go up. Hints are fine right away.
But it certainly seems as if the Editor and the Curator are at odds with each other.

I've seen a few threads that might lead to future deeper layer puzzles namely... The bold letters in some of the articles, and a few 'roswor' answers potentially combining to spell out a message similar to one of the puzzles last volume.

My guess is it might be a more advanced version of what we've seen before, and you're not noticing much because we'll need the code sheet to decipher them and put the chunks in order. Again, just a guess.

No one is being forced to look at the Codex. And I assume avid puzzlers will purposefully avoid it since it is not meant for them.

No one is being forced to look at the Codex. And I assume avid puzzlers will purposefully avoid it since it is not meant for them. That argument can be made in both directions. "No one is being forced to solve the puzzles. There are trinkets, articles, papercrafts, and other things for the non-puzzlers. I'd assume the non-puzzlers would avoid the puzzles because they're not meant for them." I understand the frustration at not being able to solve a puzzle. But that frustration is the very thing we puzzle solvers crave. We like having puzzles that remain unsolved for weeks or longer. That doesn't happen when the answers are just a click away.

If there aren't deeper layers than the obvious or some kind of greater narrative that kind of ruins it for me 😕

I have mixed feelings about the Codex. I thought it was enormously useful and helpful for Volume 3 in terms of giving us the breakdown of letters and words in some of the longer, multi-word anagrammed phrases. Also, providing correctly sized curio reproductions was very, very appreciated after the nightmare that I had with solving Volumes 1 and 2 via the Catchup Omnibus and not having critical curios for certain puzzles (Todd ended up needing to just give me answers to a part of one puzzle after I couldn't get it to work even after printing a version of a curio that the community made). I'd also somehow lost one of the needed curios for Volume 3, and being able to print it out was a godsend.
However, practically giving away the answers for Volume 4 gives me pause and feels like it's going a bit too far. It certainly suggests that the Vault will not be the same as it was before, or at least will not have the same kind of competitive nature that it's had in the past. We're finding enough oddities and unexplained things in Gods of Madness though that I suspect that there's a bigger game that's being played by the MPC and that we simply don't have enough information yet. For whatever reason, I have faith that, while things may not be exactly the same, we will be sufficiently challenged when the time comes.

I don't know about the issues with The Vault, but isn't it just a matter of self control for those who enjoy the puzzles not to look at the hints and answers?
