My two cents for whatever it's worth for people just joining, and especially for people going back and doing the catch-up, from somebody that has just "caught up":
1. NEVER write directly on the periodical. Take pictures or make copies and write on those. 2. When you're doing a first read through, take the time to make notes as you go of anything that strikes you as strange. Misspellings, things out place, that kind of stuff. 3. When you solve a puzzle, take notes as to HOW you solved it and your results because there's a good chance you're going to have to go back to that method or answer again. 4. Notes, in general. Especially if you're a busy person and might have to put the puzzles down for days or weeks at a time; otherwise you'll find yourself spending a lot of time "refreshing" your knowledge before being able to move forward. 5. DON'T take shortcuts. There's a wealth of knowledge on here and the wiki to draw from when it comes to figuring out the answers to any given puzzle, but make sure you do everything you can to understand the process of how it was solved otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot (Trust me, I know). 6. Watch out for tunnel vision - if you think you know how to solve something but it's just not fitting, take a step back and try to look at it with fresh eyes. 7. Ask for help - I've found that here on the forum and in the chat room the senior members and newbies alike are more than happy to help those that are putting in the effort, and the C&C wouldn't be nearly as much fun without that comraderie. 8. Todd really really likes puns.
Hope this was helpful, please feel free to add or subtract or edit as needed!

I'm a newbie.. backordered GofM. Then an enabler (was it @todd? ) gave me the link for Vol3. It came with ALL the papers for 1 & 2. So I just got back from office depot... made 11x17 copies of all the papers and bought binders with index tabs for each volume. Oh and new pens lol. Now to arrange them and commence my afternoon reading.
