Looking for tips. Comically it appears that I don't have a hammer in my house, so I'm going to try some other ways of prying the crate open. I'd prefer to not break the crate if possible.
Anyone else have any opening tips?

Anyone else have any opening tips? A sturdy kitchen knife should probably do the trick, but I went and purchased a small crowbar, for the sake of... I suppose you could call it immersion.

Aww, tiny crowbar! I will keep an eye out for that. I am using a screwdriver currently to carefully try and get the nails to budge. Halfway there. I will keep this crate looking good dang it!

I've been able to open two crates so far with my bare hands. I'm not a monster, either. I think the crates just weren't nailed shut well.

With the force I just used with a tiny screwdriver to open my crate, I'm impressed haha. These nails were in there really well. BUT I got the lid off without breaking it! Of course now I have a lid with nails sticking out of it. Ugh. Me and my desire to preserve. Might just take the nails out and toss them in the crate in case I want them later haha

Here's the technique I devised:
1. Using a metal spatula designed for smoothing out spackle and plaster, I edge it into the crack, moving around the box, and slowly use it to lever up the lid about a quarter inch at the points where the nails are located.
2. Then I use a hammer to lightly tamp down the wooden lid, thus leaving the heads of the nails protruding upward.
3. Finally, I use a pliers to pull the nails out.
This has gotten all lids off all the crates in perfect condition except one, which was already cracked by the initial hammering in the of the nail.

I've always used one of the kitchen butter knives.
