I had a thought,
Would it be more helpful to tell you all the answer then we critique the connections to that answer? See if we can't beef up any of the clues?

I honestly just forgot that I wanted to research this more haha. We started watching Sense 8 at my place so my evenings have been occupied. I would be okay with an answer, and then maybe I can try and find my way there using the clue, see if it works out.

Assuming my google is correct, here was my thought process and why it might need a little bit more help in the clue department: I looked up the lantern which led me to learn about Siena Cathedral. "At your feet" there are some cool floor mosaics. If I'm looking for something that matches what is possible with the letter options, I suppose I would get Moses eventually. Maybe a date or something would be helpful? And is Moses the father's friend? Is that common knowledge? haha Perhaps I'm just not "versed" enough heh heh

Did that in a few hours what I am hoping 5 of my friends can do in a few weeks. Okay so if you research the Order of the Golden Dawn (which is what the players know to be researching), Hermes Trismegistus is the main picture of Wikipedia for the OGD. He is listed as the Father of Hermeticism. OGD is a Hermetic Order. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermetic_Order_of_the_Golden_DawnOne of the floor mosaics at Siena Cathedral is of Hermes Trismegistus. At his feet there is a caption that says "Hermes Mercurious Trismegistus, contemporary of Moses." So the Father's (of Hermeticism) friend (contemporary) is Moses. My thought process on creating the riddle. So you are the second person to get stuck after the floor mosaic part. It seems that people are missing out on the Hermes Trismegistus connection. I need to beef up something related to him.

Ha, I didn't even think to look that up as I had assumed it was made up. Also, without having the full experience, I sort of glossed over the intro details and went straight to the riddle. I think given the context and the timeline, your friends will manage to get to that answer eventually.
If not, one of the things I had to employ with my not-so-puzzle-saavy friend is to include smaller mailings of things that just happened to have tips. Since mine involved a psychic, it was easy for her to be possessed, scribble something on a piece of paper, and then wake up knowing who to mail it to.

Cool, thank you! For this case, I can always release some "new found records" that point here or there, I suppose.
It feels a bit fake, but it's better than just stonewalling the group entirely.

Maybe a cropping of the appropriate area and edited a little to look like a postcard or something?

Yeah that would be perfect, or I could possibly find some sort of existing essay (if I'm really lucky) or at least discussion on Hermeticism or on Hermes Trismegistus and forward that along, if they end up really stuck.
Right now I am trying to figure out how to set up an auto reply email address that they can send the answer to.
If I recall, I saw someone did that here on these forums. Currently digging through right now.

Thank you!
I'll read that today after work.

So yesterday I decided that I don't really need an auto reply mailbox for this particular riddle, since I am sending them information and they know they are contacting me as their SLS contact. Because of that I just bought Silverlampsociety.com for 99 cents, and made a simple blogger site with a Contact us email link. If I need to make other dead drops or similar in the future, I may build an unmonitored account with a canned reply. www.silverlampsociety.com
