Having spent the last two nights working on 1973, I'm immensely impressed with it. It may not have the deepest mystery of all time (this is really more of a whydunnit than a whodunnit, though to be fair there are at least two or three viable killers), but the presentation and the quality of the materials are both excellent, and unlike a certain recent MPC experience, there's nothing that feels superfluous or that deeply pulls you out of the narrative. There are also some very clever and tricky ciphers to crack, and let's just say that you shouldn't plan to be able to resell 1973 in "mint condition" if you want to solve everything. There also happens to be a large amount of very well done extra online content that all prove essential to solving the case, not to mention an actual vinyl record and a very cool T-shirt that has more to it than meets the eye.
For around $250 (I think they have a sale on it right now that has it for under $200), this is a great experience filled with neat items (including several items that you could very well use in real life), and is probably the best thing that HaK has done. Highly recommended.

The front of my box says to text 31996 before opening, but I live overseas and that doesn't work. How important were/are the texts? Is there anyway around that?

So excited to delve into it now!

New premium experience just became available for purchase. They're 2 for 3 with their premium experiences in my opinion, and this one is cheap at a hundred bucks, so probably worth checking out if you have any small interest. Limited to 1,000 copies, and that's really now 999 thanks to me. www.huntakiller.com/hawthorn-junction

I have to say, I like the HAK commercials better than the ASPCA commercials. Don't get me wrong, I have four beautiful cats from various shelters. But the ASPCA commercials are so soul sucking, while the HAK commercials make me want to know what's next.

If I'm not the only one left getting HAK boxes, I will say that when you open season 2 box 2 (the envelope inside to be technical), be very careful that you don't lose something small and shiny.

I just received Season 1 Box 6. So I have two left. I already signed up for Season 2. Thanks for the heads up.

I just received it today, and I have no idea if it's still available, but at least presentation-wise, I am immensely impressed with the newest premium experience from Hunt A Killer, Hawthorn Junction. I won't go into much detail in case you want go in totally blind (the promo page doesn't describe what it is, so I'll follow their lead), but know that for a hundred bucks, the package has literally dozens of items in it and is incredibly convincing in terms of what it's trying to emulate. The mystery you're trying to solve is also vague at first glance, so you really have to do some detective work in order to draw connections between items. Just from presentation alone, I think it's worth it; hopefully the mystery solving lives up to its first impression.

So I unsubbed from HAK after season 1 a while back but I just got an email from them advertising a new narrative called "Initiation"
How's that work exactly? Does anyone know if it's just a reformat of season 1 or is it really totally new? How's it fit in with the old series?

I only just recently got box 2 of Initiation, and I can say that it is not a reformat of season 1.

I got the same email about getting 15% off if I come back. I only unsubscribed because I still intend to do season 1 with my adult kids. (We do game nights about once a month.) But we've been doing other games and haven't started season 1 of this series yet! I figured I'd restart my subscription once we get into that first season. Glad to hear it's different!

From my understanding, and this is based only on a letter we got about a month ago and how the inventory pages on HaK's website have been organized, the situation is this:
Initiation is actually Season 3, with Awakening (the original season with 8 boxes) being Season 1 and Transformation being Season 2. However, they're effectively rebooting the whole experience with Initiation, and new subscribers (and presumably returning subscribers) will start with Initiation and will not receive anything from Season 1 or 2. I can't speak to whether or not Initiation starts things over or not, as I'm in the middle of Season 2 (I won't get the first box of Initiation until May).
For what it's worth, I don't think this is a bad idea: Season 1 doesn't really get good until the very end (I was extremely close to canceling after box 6, but stuck with it and am glad I did) and Season 2, which directly follows Season 1's story, started off strong but drags in the middle, though things are starting to get intriguing again with elements in Box 4. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Season 3 and getting what I assume will be something of a fresh start.
