The first book I ever read about codes was when I was a child decades ago. It was: Codes, Ciphers and Secret Writings by Martin Gardner. I still have the book today.
Years later someone gave me Helen Fouche Gaines book, Cryptanalysis a study of ciphers and their solutions. A group of us used it in college to leave each other messages on a public bulletin board.
Last week, I picked up a used book a couple of used books. One was the Book of Codes - Understanding the World of Hidden Messages, An Illustrated Guide to Signs, Symbols, Ciphers and Secret Languages. This has been an excellent read and I highly recommend it. Lightly touches on so many topics and the history of each. The other is a Dictionary of Symbols.
Does anyone else have a favorite book about the history of codes? or a reference book about codes and ciphers that they like to keep on the bookshelf?

The Code Book by Simon Singh is very good. I enjoyed it. simonsingh.net/books/the-code-book/I'm editing this since there's a historical novel I don't see mentioned anywhere else... Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson has SOME history in it, though it's a novel. Also, has a description of a great cipher (Solitaire) that uses a deck of cards. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solitaire_(cipher)
