So mrpikel and I have been working on this one together. We're pretty sure we're on the right track. We... "unscrambled" letters to point toward a certain traitorous article and/or curio ...but still can't quite get to a 14 letter answer. Can anyone confirm that we're on the right track and/or adjust our focus?

The "mistakes" are what's driving me nuts. Especially since they even reference them in the clues. Yes! I do enjoy the clue about typos in the CNC...... but this crossword..... *shakes angry fist* That one took me FOREVER to get!

I think I have all of the circled letters. I'm not seeing that they are in any kind of order. Is it another "Randomly arrange and rearrange the 23 letters til you get an anagram that points to the 14 letter answer we want" sort of thing? So let's start with the circled letters, in order ENOFRDTYOFTTWONHEOWLINE Please let me know if I'm up the wrong tree here. PMed you [br I'm in the same boat Jessi - can you PM me as well?

The letters break down into 6 words that break down to 5 3 4 4 4 3 Really? I got 3 2 3 4 5 3 4 and got the right answer. I'm curious as to what phrase you got!

Once you add that in there, two of the words in the phrase are numbers and one is a direction (not a compass direction like north or south; a spatial direction, like up or down). The phrase also refers back to one of the crossword clues.

Are we far enough along that we can post the phrases? Because the phrase a number of us used didn't seem to point the right way in my opinion. I'll start: Forty two down flee into the The problem with this is that it requires changing one of the Ns to Ts in: ENOFRDTYOFTTWONHEOWLINE Would you mind posting your phrase?

I don't have the paper in front of me.

I don't have the paper in front of me. Yes, the letters I got were ENOFRDTYOFTTWONHEOWLINE The only phrase I got with that that made sense was END OF THE LINE FORTY TWO DOWN It's true that that involves adding in a letter, but the MPC has a history of missing/extra/wrong letters like this (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not), so I just assumed that was the case here and added in the extra D I think that's also why a couple people have talked about Nigerian goats. If you Google the phrase END OF THE LINE GOATS , the first link that comes up is to a farm in New Jersey that sells them. Oh, and for those who are ending up there...you don't need to be there, that's coincidence. Instead, think about what would be the "end of the line" for a goat? Or a pig? Or a cow? Or really any kind of livestock that has the misfortune to be delicious? If you're still stuck, taking a break and reading a good book might help- maybe something by Kurt Vonnegut.

Where did the missing D come from? The only phrase I got that made any sense was EN OF THE LINE FORTY TWO DOWN which just needed a D. Again, the MPC has a history of wrong/extra/missing letters (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not), so I just threw in a D. The answer this led me to was the correct one.
