But really there's no need to debate this; those of you who have ordered will find out soon enough! By my estimation, you will learn as soon as May 17... 2027.

During the craze of spiritualism that took place after the Fox sisters gained attention, seances and the taking of spirit photographs became an enormous fad. So the images of the cameras are related to spirit photography (and adding the Seance side story will put your chosen photo into a spirit photo).
This is entirely separate from the invention of the various optical toys which preceded cinema.

I will bet you one humble post praising your wisdom if I am wrong.

Well there is another clue in the artifact description of the KS level of just the artifact - a note from the curator relating the artifact to the story. And given another description of the house is that there's a supposed haunting then it strikes me that most likely the solution to the mystery is that it's all a fake using the tech at the time and that's what the artifact is - camera obscura, magic lantern, yes something of that ilk, used to fake seances and that?

The camera obscura was created before the development of film. Once film existed (which it does by the time line given for the story) there was no practical use for it. Those items were not used to to fake seances.

A decent sized Pepper's Ghost miniature would be pretty sweet.

I published a book about seances and their history in 1985 or so, and the author made no mention of magic lanterns that I can recall. However, I suppose it's possible. But I really can't see why you would need one. There are a lot of ways to scare the hell out of people in the dark.
Disney marketed something called the "Ghost Post" this past spring. One of the items that came with it was a miniature Pepper's Ghost that used your cellphone to provide the moving image of the Singing Busts from the graveyard scene.

Additionally, just received an email from the Curator that when the third stretch goal of hair is reached (why they are making a big deal about a lock of hair I can't figure out) they are going to open up additional stretch goals:
"As we enter our second week, we are nearly at our third stretch goal; wherein we incorporate real human hair into the experience. As you well know, fidelity with the real world is of the highest priority for us, and little sells a reality, or sends chills down the spine, like running one’s fingers through a lock of hair and realizing it is not synthetic.
"With your help, we can surpass our third stretch goal, and I have already announced that once we have, we shall reveal a series of new stretch goals, among other surprises."

My memory, sadly, is not what it used to be an eon ago. I believe I saw a question about what it would take to unlock the key mentioned in one of the curator's emails. I was just looking through the old updates for the Century Beast Kickstarter and saw one where it was mentioned that $500,000 in pledges would be needed to unlock the key. We are still well short of that, though we are inching toward the "real hair" stretch goal being unlocked. Obviously just because $500,000 was mentioned (I don't remember now if it was an update from Jason Kalpaka or someone else) does not mean that that is the amount necessary to unlock the key in this Kickstarter campaign. But it is not unreasonable to make that assumption. I did not think this was a spoiler (obviously) but others may feel differently. If the moderators feel a need to "spoiler tag" this post, or in any way modify or move it, or even remove it . Please do so as you see fit.

helenahandbasket, that is very interesting. Had no idea. Makes the whole thing pretty creepy. Anyone read the book Wisconsin Death Trip?

The constant cracks about how it's the intern's hair will make it far less creepy, in my humblest of opinions. I know, none of us would truly believe the artifact to be what it portends to be. But, I would enjoy the illusion more without the peek behind the curtain beforehand.
