I have never tackled something like C and C before. I have done puzzles and games before but nothing like this. I would like to start at the beginning ( I have the catchup omnibus) but don't know what is a clue and what isn't and I want to work my way through it. Any tips for a super newbie?

Hi a good place to start is the horoscopes in the first issue of volume one . The horoscopes all have something in common . Try to work this out then go from there is my advice . The first 2 volumes have some good puzzles in them . Enjoy

Always start with the obvious puzzles, IMO. The crosswords, for instance.

We're going through the same thing with volume 3 right now. It's different enough from what came before that we're not positive what is and isn't significant.
With volumes 1 and 2, each individual issue has hints in the appropriate sections on this forum. I think they are still incomplete at this time, but requests for hints might inspire us to make sure they are complete.
But generally, though, there are only a few puzzles in every issue, and a lot of interesting, but inconsequential, content. The crossword puzzles will help you with one puzzle arc, but there is a story that evolves as well. If you're on issue three, you may have noticed a series of icons that seem to be unrelated to any of the stories in one of the issues. Don't give up, stick with it, man, and you'll take your first step down that rabbit hole.
I see you've popped into chat a few times. A few of us lurk there. If you say my name, I'll notice your and respond more quickly.
Happy puzzling! We're here to help.

My God, I can't even seem to figure out how to get in the chat room recommended! I am doomed! I would consider myself a pretty tech savy person, but i just am not understanding the website for the chat room. I recieved my very first C & C, which is the most recent volume, v0302. And I literally have no clue what to do. I decided I might as well start reading the paper, as I do when I find things that stick out to me or interest me I will look it up on the Internet and get more info. I know part of the fun and process is the mystery of it all, and that probably one reason why I have not been able to locate information guiding a newbie as to what to do in the beginning. I mean, I have gone and thoroughly read through all the websites suggested here on the forum, but none of which have been very helpful in the first stages of this experience. I want to make the most out of the experience, if I want more guidance from someone that's ok, this is MY experience. You may not need or want any help, and that's ok too. So, basically I'm ranting because I wish there were more help for new people IF they should want it. As I finish typing this I am staring at the word stack puzzle in my copy, having never seen anything like it, can not find any resources to help me figure it out, and not knowing what to do... Not a very fun "experience." I will keep marching on and looking for information to help me however, I am definitely not giving up! If you are willing to help a newbie in the right direction and perhaps be a mentor of sorts feel free to reach out to me! I would greatly appreciate it! -Best wishes!

Hello and welcome, nikkistyson, Starting with the second issue of the volume has left you a bit behind. The previous issue was supposed to help familiarize you with the things you are looking for as far as puzzles and meta-puzzles. I highly recommend getting the Volume 3 Issue 1 back issue, as you will need it if you choose to complete this volume. To help get you started on this issue, though, I will point out a convention introduced last issue: Every puzzle is marked with a symbol. They look like the symbols on the map. Also, let me refer you back to the MPC website. At the footer of the page, there is a link to the Vaults. This is where the meta-answers go. We are typically a very helpful bunch here, but are probably dedicating more time to problem-solving ourselves than being helpful. I apologize for that. I suggest picking a puzzle and giving it a go. If you encounter a problem, post in the appropriate thread in the section of this forum dedicated to the issue you're working. Create a thread if an appropriate one does not exist. I'm sure one of us will help you as quickly as we are able.

Todd, Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post! And for the suggestions as to where to jump in. After ordering my first issue I didn't read into it much more and just waited until I received it. Once I received it i started doing some research and reading up on the whole thing and I did read somewhere it is extremely helpful to get the back issue. You just give me more confirmation to do that. I am going directly after this post to order! I am very intimidated by the puzzles. I would consider myself a bright individual, but some of the puzzles I can't even fathom being able to solve, or even where to begin trying to... But I am also a very loyal person to something I have begun. Sooo it may take me a little longer than some, but I am going to continue to research whatever I need to in order to learn what I need to make the most of this experience!! Going into this I knew it would be like nothing else I have ever done, but it's hard to understand what exactly your getting into until your in it with this! Last night I was on the companies fb page reading pretty much every comment on every post they have for the last year or so looking for anything that I could use to help me, and the majority of the people commenting have no idea the complexity of this! I imagined it would be intriguing and "mysterious " but I didn't realize how far down a rabbit hole it can take you! lol Anyhow, I'm rambling now... I'm off to buy the back issue! Thanks again for being kind enough to lend your guidance. -Nikki

Todd, One more question for the moment... So in v0302 the word stack puzzle for example, are the answers found throughout the paper? As I read the clue, or statement offered, (not sure how else to describe it, they aren't really in question form per say) I see some that could possibly be included in the paper due to similarities in content, others I'm not sure. Im afraid maybe I'm actually reading TOO far into somethings by thinking I may have to research other avenues besides to paper for the answers, but I don't want to make things more difficult for myself if the answers are right under my nose. I am sorry if it may seem like a silly question to you, I'm sure it just proves my inexperience in these type matters. Thank you again for your time!!! PS- ordered volume 1!!!

The Word Stack clues are a series of movie plot descriptions. Identify what each one describes, and then fit the movie titles into the grid below. One row for each title. Not in the order listed. The grid has some anomalies. Boxes that occupy more than one row mean that the adjacent rows feature the same letter in that position.

It occurs to me, reading this thread, that if you are coming into these issues with limited experience in variety puzzles it might be worth picking up a variety puzzle magazine and taking a look at the various puzzle types and how to solve them. Dell and Penny Press usually have good variety puzzle books or magazines. That should give you a good start on how to tackle the various surface puzzles at least. The deeper twists to the MPC puzzles that make C&C unique are something we are all working through

sort of off topic:
Is anyone else having trouble connecting to the irc server this morning?

Well, I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon this group! I just received my first C&C yesterday (The Child of the Cavern) and had already worked through the first onion-skin layer of the puzzles by this afternoon. I became intrigued by mention of The Order of Sand and Smoke, and following interweb rabbit trails, I came upon you lovely people. I clearly have some catching up to do!
I didn't even remember there was a Vault until I read a reminder here a short while ago, but now I've set about the task of unlocking what I can. You've taught me already to look deeper and allow myself to be more immersed and intrigued by the interrelationships of clues, and I must say that I'm even more hooked now than I was before. I've ordered Vol. 3, Issue 1 so I can get the full story of this volume.
Thank you for already contributing to my fascination and delight.
