I was thinking of purchasing a version of "King in yellow" to compliment this gift. Do people have a suggestion for what version I should get? Is the regular book better, or should I consider the graphic novel? Thanks!

The original book is available as a free pdf download from the Gutenberg Press. Nothing to buy.
I prefer the graphic novel. The text is not turgid and the graphics are excellently done. Very moody stuff.

in my opinion the book is better. the graphic novel changes the story to tie itself all together but most of these mere connection are easy to pick up on as you read the book.

They're interstitials, really, and as you say are easy to spot.
I found the graphic novel very helpful in deciphering one of the two paper items which came with (I believe) the crate.
