It's out of print, unlike S, that's going to drive the prices way up.

Name is J.C. Hutchins. Here's a direct link to the book on Amazon. Personal Effects on AmazonA lot of the third-party sellers list the book but don't say whether or not the "stuff" is included. I have a feeling even my copy -- which had a ton of stuff inside -- might still not have *everything* that someone would have gotten in a brand-new copy when it was first published. But you can read the book without the artifacts. That would be harder to do with a book like "S." The artifacts and things tucked into the pages seem more integral to the complete story-set.

Mod Hat On: I don't mind the discussion of Personal Effects, etc., but we were trying to keep topics a little more organized. Are there opinions/objections to me whooshing the Personal Effects posts to a new thread so the S. thread can remain the S. thread? Is Personal Effects going to get whooshed? I think I had other questions about it but was waiting for the new thread.

Due to the fact that this topic was introduced in another thread, and the remainder of that post was on topic in the original thread, and due to the fact that posts in a thread are arranged by original post time, the original post that started this thread is quoted here: I'm now reading a book called PERSONAL EFFECTS, which also has photos and paperwork in it, but I got mine used on Amazon and everything came tucked into a little flap in the back cover of the book. Unsure if that's how it came when it was new, though I suspect so. It's also been a lot of fun to read.

I'm coming to the end stretch of PERSONAL EFFECTS (will likely finish over the weekend). It's not as artifact-dense as S, and I'm scratching my head over a few of the things they included because, although they seem realistic and fun, they don't seem to add much to the story. But all in all, it's another fun experience with a hard copy of a book. It feels a little more like a mystery for ME to solve than just a story to read. And I think that's the appeal to those of us here.
A few more websites were mentioned in the section I read last night, so I'm going to see if any of those sites are still "live" ... but I suspect they are not. My thought then is that anybody who uses URLs in their books should commit to keeping those domain names active. Doesn't cost that much to park a website with a little bit of content on it. Sure, the phone numbers might cost more to keep active, but still... the author and publisher should keep these things in mind. So, I suppose, when a book like this goes out of print, it takes the associated media with it.

I contacted one of the authors and the media company that did all the recordings and websites went out of business. They were apologetic and I am guessing there was probably an intellectual property issue as well. Is the book good on its own? I just purchased and hate to return something.

Sorry I am just seeing this!
I did enjoy the book perfectly well on its own. The clips and artifacts that did come with my used copy were helpful but weren't in any way completely necessary to understand or enjoy the book. In the book "S" you really did need some of those items that were tipped in (and they needed to be in the right spots) in order to fully grasp some of what was going on, but THAT book is a lot more complex because it's essentially 2-3 stories intertwined.
This is one linear story you can follow by reading. The added papers/photos, and even websites, I suppose, enhance the book but don't make it confusing if they're missing.

I picked this up when it came out. It seemed right up my alley. It had all these pieces of evidence inside you could handle. Similar to an issue of C&C. The story is lobotomy dumb. There is no point in having all these extras if there is no story to discover outside the book. I finished it, disappointed and looked up the author. He was involved with the creation of the CSI tv show. Which is a pretty dumb police procedural. So if you would go to Las Vegas and enjoy the CSI Experience, this book may provide some enjoyment.

My used copy just arrived from Amazon, sans bits. Does anyone have a photo of what would be inside? Everything I could find online was related to Harry Potter.

I'll see if I can take out my copy and lay out all the pieces and photograph them later today.
