This issue contains what appears to be the top left section of a map. The map has a number of perplexing features. Discuss Here. It's worth noting that there are 27 unique symbols on the map.

I only counted 25 unique characters. Each character appears from 1 to 5 times. The sample size may be too small to make frequency analysis worthwhile.
That being said, 3 of the characters from elsewhere in the paper (Patently Ridiculous, Minced Words, and Perplexle) I didn't find on the map. That would bring the total up to 28. By my count, 10 symbols appear once, 7 twice, 3 three times, 3 four times, and 2 five times.

Numbering each symbol based on its first appearance, these are what I see: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (5) (7) (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (3)
(8) (9) (6) (10) (11) (9) (12)
(13) (10) (14) (15) (13)
(2) (16) (17) (18) (14) (13) (19) (3)
(2) (16) (3) (20) (16) (21) (5) (16) (3) (22) (16) (14) (11) (9) (12) (22) (23)
(24) (18) (25) (4) (26) (14) (11) (9) (27)

For those that may have figured out the compass on the map. Is there any guidance you can provide to those still acquiring these skills?

So, computer nerd that I am, I tried a brute-force approach. I got myself a file with 40k 8 letter words and another file with 20k 6 letter words and I looked for combinations that fit the first set:
(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (5) (7)
(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (3)
My computer spit out 29 candidate combinations including such gems as BUSHELED BUSHES, CARPETED CARPER, MASONING MASONS, QUANTITY QUANTA, and (like my Oxford comma?) WASTERED WASTES.
I've just obtained word lists for 12 letter and 5 letter words so I can try expanding my program a bit to see if it yields any better results. And the results are in... there are only two 12 letter words in my dictionary that fit the pattern (2) (16) (3) (20) (16) (21) (5) (16) (3) (22) (16) (14) : HENPECKERIES and UNCONSENTING, which I haven't checked against all 29 candidates from above.
Of course, if any of the symbols are non-letters or repeated, or the symbols are encoded words rather than dictionary words, then my approach is totally worthless.

I think that each symbol on the map is one word each, with each part of the symbol (such as square, circle, 3 vertical lines, dot, zigzag, etc.) being the letters. Each grouping of symbols would be a sentence.

Each grouping of symbols would be a sentence. That's an excellent theory... There are two symbols with three vertical lines, for instance. I can't remember which two, I don't have my notes. Perplexle and kick maybe?

If each symbol is a word and the elements of the symbol are letters then we should still be able to look for letter frequency to help decipher (I would try it but won't have time for a few days). But wouldn't this make each word a very simple two to three letter word as most of the symbols only have a few elements?

She may separate the symbols differently than I, and may have better luck as a result.

How about they are not short words, but syllables? so for example, the Kick could be the first 3 veggie letters, since it has 3 different symbol parts.. something like that

My thinking was they told us on page 1 that The Medium is the Message and the medium's name is Madame Morpheme. While morphemes aren't quite syllables, it made sense to me that perhaps the symbols on the map were encoding morphemes rather than letters or even entire words. I'm in the process of breaking down the symbols into constituent parts and doing counts for analytical purposes.
