Hi all,
I've figured out what is wanted here, but I haven't figure out yet what I apparently have wrong in my level 1 results. (Given what I do have, my potential deeper result has a very suggestive candidate so I feel sure I am on the correct path.) Has anyone else made progress? I'd be interested in comparing the level 1 results with someone.
Or if, as the conversation above this post might suggest, I'm actually navigating in previously uncharted puzzle waters, let me know and I can drop a hint or two on getting started with this one.

Hint for getting started on the horoscopes: You come into the puzzle with a specific set of recommendations. Take them literally. That said, that piece of advice was something I realized after I figured out Virgo. It was making a wager on the pigeon-loving Muppet that finally made it all click.

I found this helpful to get me started, but this is a hard one for me, I think I have found another but am finding this puzzle rather difficult, any further hints will be helpfull Some general solving tips: Change is in the air. Let changing words guide you. First come, first swerved. Edited to add: Forgot the most important hint: The thesaurus is a friendly beast. And when you are further along: At some point your path forward might seem clear. But as you start to question your steps along the path, remember to also question your ultimate destination.

The intro to the Horoscopes says: To me, this means: ... seriously, I'm about to use very plain and direct language here so I'm double-spoilering... can't say I didn't warn you... Each horoscope has been re-written (rejuvenated, transformed). In order to get the message, we must figure out what was discarded (letters) and thus we will learn the cause of our malaise (presumably how we came to be "X not Y" as referenced in the deeper level of Perplexle). I suspect we're ultimately aiming for a 12-letter word or phrase here.
If my interpretation is correct and I've understood what others have said, then Virgo is an easy starting place where ... again, seriously plain and direct language ahead... no beating around the bush... you were warned... The author likes to bet on Bert. Thus we get the letter B. Attempting to apply this logic to Aries ... yeah, I'm gonna double-spoiler this whole post... because I can... If you're wired, have some wine ==> W. Though I'm not as confident in this one as I am on Virgo.
And Gemini could be All aboard the double-spoiler train! If you're drunk, take a dunk ==> D? Coincidence that this one and Virgo both involve dropping an 'R'? If you think I'm stretching here, just wait for the next one.
And how about that Capricorn You're getting tired of the double-spoiler thing, aren't you? You're going to tell me to leave the boards and never come back. It's ok... I understand. When your brawling turns to bawling... I don't like to think that I've lost an R so much as gained a B. The more of this I write, the more convinced I am that I was way off base with Aries. But I'm gonna leave it up there. Removing it might make this whole post seem smarter and more insightful, but leaving my mistakes out in public also reminds the rest of the folks struggling with this puzzle that they're not alone and we all goof up at some point.

I'd like to suggest that you ponder further about the last sentence of the intro... and look at what you are discarding. I found that a promising approach and it lead me to an answer. But I am not ready to swear it's the only one! I am finding that there is more to most of these puzzles than it may appear at third or even fourth glance.

I think it's actually the other way around. Look not at what letters are the same, but rather, what are different. So, for example with "bet" and "Bert," don't take the B that starts both words- rather, take the R that is the only different letter between them.
Similarly, with Taurus, it mentions Chianti and victory- "wine" and "win," once again two words separated by only one letter. This technique yields a very interesting answer that seems to tie in directly with the message from the Patently Ridiculous/Perplexle puzzle.

One minor puzzlement remains but I think I now have the right answer despite that. And the solution I have is very very worrisome in conjunction with two of the other puzzles: A literary reference mentioned in one of the online definitions of the solution I have creates a very suggestive link to the message revealed by Patently Ridiculous. It might be worth digging deeper into the referenced work... I have looked into this, and have included a brief synopsis: A man encounters and infiltrates a secret society of 'scientists'; the leader of this group can apparently use telepathy, and has uncovered the secret of transmuting metals (as the *alchemists* sought). The hero uncovers and foils the leader's plot, which is to destroy the earth by 'etherization,' essentially using atomic energy (this work is apparently notable as the first work [dating from 1895] to describe an atomic blast). Obviously there are a few connections to elements of our overall story (a secret society, alchemical pursuits) but I'm not sure that there is any more to this than that. After reading through it, nothing specifically leaps out, aside from what was mentioned previously (being the quote referenced in the dictionary definition, connecting to Patently Ridiculous; the quote comes from a part of the novel where the hero gives the group's leader a drug which dulls his telepathic powers.) So there are certainly some links overall, but whether they are merely thematic or meant to be more substantive I am not sure.
