This concept is typified by the widely known One Thousand And One Nights, a compendium of stories which has endured since at least the eighth century even as it has flowed through languages, cultures and epochs. From a relatively small core of original stories in the Sanskit fable tradition emerging from India and Persia, it evolved and grew to the full one thousand and one nights we know today through aggregation. As it moved through the world it acquired more stories: Arabic, Syrian, Egyptian, all from their own rich traditions, each iteration interpreting existing material. Once it broke into the western world with Antoine Galland's French translation in the early 1700s, a whole new set of cultural and linguistic Adaptations were imposed on it, followed by John Payne and Sir Richard Francis Burton's English translations, so similar that accusations of plagiarism arose. It's interesting to consider the very notion of 'plagiarism' in the efforts to accurately translate the same source, which points to the inevitable ephemerality of One Thousand And One Nights.
These stories are alive. The act of storytelling lets them grow and change and adapt to the environment they find themselves in. One can track the hopes and fears of each culture that adopted them. India provided tales from the Buddhist tradition, deeply moral stories with ethical purpose. Burton, on the other hand, played up the lasciviousness of the Nights, even including digressions in footnotes and appendices about "Oriental" sexual mores. The spread is even more staggering when you move past translation and consider adaptation and influence into weird culture. In evolutionary terms One Thousand and One Nights is surely one of the most successful literary organisms in human history.
Because of this it is possible to impose a phylogeny on the stories as evolutionary branches. Working backwards from available sources it is possible to cross-reference traits and elements to find commonality which points to a 'common ancestor'. Many stories from the original tradition are thought to be lost forwever, but their echoes endure in the genes of their offspring, lurking between the lines and, quite possibly, retrievable. This is the endurance of storytelling. Just as your genes have endured countless generations, the stories we tell today have the weight of centuries upon them, still connected in a vital way to their forgotten forebears.
