Hansel and Gretel is another well known tale that the Librarians connect to another well known tale. It's important, as we journey through our Catalogs, that these types of connections are explored. This kind of study can help with your future endeavors.
I've been overwhelmed lately with work responsibilities (need to be able to afford my hobbies). I have long intended to return to this episode and attempt to begin some discussion by pointing out some very distinct differences between Hansel and Gretel and Cain and Abel.
In the biblical book of Genesis, it was Cain and Abel's parents who ate the forbidden food. And fratricide is a key element of the story, with evil holding the upper hand at the end.
In the Hansel and Gretel stories, the children lost in the woods are the ones who eat what they should not, and rather than one killing the other, they work together to defeat evil.
I am also interested in exploring other siblings, like Romulus and Remus, and Sherlock and Mycroft, to name a pair of pairs.
Now I'm considering instead simply planting this seed, and hoping someone is inspired to further explore the similarities and differences of other literary siblings.
When I have some time alone with my thoughts, I will get back into this exploration.
