I completed the mystery in about 4-5 hours. I got the correct solution in the end, though it turns out I missed a couple of clues but it was because I wasn’t paying close enough attention in a couple of spots. I had a good time puzzling this over. I’ll let my friend try it out minus my notes and give him the final report questions separately so as not to spoil it for him.
For the price, if you can do without tangible clues, I might recommend Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. Same kind of set up and each case includes a newspaper. If you want a Lovecraftian version of that, Mythos Tales.
There are no photos or notes or other clues to examine and hold in hand. If that is what you want, Hunt a Killer has monthly boxes that includes notes and clues and puzzles. I found them too broad for my taste. I felt unfocused compared to this. A 6 month subscription cost me $165 and the first season was 8 months so I didn’t get the last two. Hunt a Killer has all in one, single shipment experiences but they were more expensive than this if I remember correctly.
Overall, I enjoyed this and I could be tempted to try another one if they had it but I think I would want it a little bit cheaper. If you got this with the discount code for sending in the mail application I think that price was definitely worth it for this. I paid regular price and I’m not disappointed, but also not over the moon.

Mine arrived today, but I've only had a chance to give it a cursory look. At first glance, it looked somewhat like a choose your own adventure story. I guess I wasn't really sure what to expect. I'm hoping to give it a better look over tomorrow.

Upon the first glance I had the same opinion of Nick up there.
This looks just like a slightly more tactile version of Sherlock Holes/Mythos Tales (which I’m into).
Until I complete it, and see the full range of the evidence, I don’t know if I would be in for the full $70.
I was lucky enough to get it with the old C&C discount, and $20 felt like a steal. So, right price seems somewhere in between those two. Upon initial inspection at least.

OK so I received this today. I open the box and looked at the materials but did not open the clues since this is a gift. It does appear to be very similar to consulting detective. Now that game you can purchase on Amazon for about $35. It has many different adventures and takes much longer to play. Compared to this product which cost $70 and according to other reviews Only takes a few hours to play… What am I missing that it should cost twice as much?

I finished this the other day and found it...odd. It was certainly better than I was expecting in terms of writing and the overall mystery (I actually got fooled by one aspect of the final solution, which is very rare for me with this kind of thing), but in terms of a "game" it was quite lacking. It's completely derivative of Consulting Detective, and yet there's no mechanic in the rules that makes it so you feel pressure to try and solve the mystery in a short amount of moves or time. You can just go anywhere you want and pursue as many leads as you can. As a result, while investigating the mystery was fun in the same way that it is in Consulting Detective, there was zero tension while doing so. I do in general like the presentation of the whole thing, though the way they sealed the evidence bags was highly annoying. Speaking of the evidence bags, if you're expecting lots of cool props to be inside them, don't be; I was actually disappointed by the relative sameness of their contents, with only one evidence bag being a real standout in any way.
Overall, I'm not sure how to feel about this, and it's hard to convey one aspect of why I'm uncertain without going into heavy spoilers about the ending. I feel like this final product is clearly not what they were originally intending to produce (it would have made much more sense for this to contain multiple cases like they were originally going to do with the subscription box model, both from a narrative and a design perspective), and as a result it feels sort of half-finished. I got the discount and was certainly satisfied with the experience for $20; I think I would have been OK with paying $30-35 for it but no more. $70 seems exorbitant for what you get. If they end up producing more cases for it, I'd be intrigued but the price point would have to be right.

I did this with a group last night. It took us about 3 hrs and we really enjoyed it, especially the story element and solving a mystery. We’re now looking to order another similar experience if anyone has a suggestion.
BTW, where are people getting these great discounts? I got a 10% off discount at the end of this experience and a $15 off one via email, but those are minor compared to what others are saying.
Given that most of the other experiences are closer to $200 than the $70 this one was, I want to ensure they are worth paying so much more.

I think the crazy discount that you're referring to was the one given out to Curios and Conundrums Vol 4 subscribers that sent in a GDA application (that was initially "rejected").

I started to read the introduction of the pulp book. I couldn't help but cackle at the, "he's young, maybe a rookie, but he's already got that LAPD edge--he doesn't give a damn, about you or your papers" I work for the freakin' LAPD
