Im wondering if anyone has any idea what the italicized and parenthesized parts of the crossword clues mean? I could not find any connection between this part of the clue and the first part of the clue or to the answer.

I see word pairs from each clue. Each word having 4 letters with 2 letters in common.

I'm curious what others got for the second meaning on a couple of the italicized clues... I have some that don't sit well with me, not least of all because it looks like one always replaces the ME in each first half clue word with two other letters. But then that didn't seem to be the case for my answers for 32A and 65D. I'm also just not sure about 62D.

I think I've got all of the second meanings, not completely confident in a few (11D, for example). For the ones you cited, A quick check of a thesaurus should do the trick. 65D is more obscure than 32A. Now to just figure out what to do with them. I have an idea, but the task seems rather daunting.

Having a little trouble with one of the italicized clues: 32 Across. "Like raths" gave me MOME, and "(or their matriarchs)" gave me MOMS. But that would only give me one letter and I need two from each of the 16 italic clues to get my 32 letters. Should I be including the M with the S? Or am I way off?

I *think*, and it's conjecture since we haven't solved it yet, that the letters that are of interest are the ones that replace ME. Even if one of them is an M or an E. There are 32 such letters and 32 spaces on the clue, so it couldn't be just the S. Uniformity throughout the puzzle, take whatever two are replaced by ME. I could be wrong, though.

To get the letters to be unscrambled I Wrote down the words from the italicized clues, and then proceeded to cross out doubles. For example, 1)hate 2)meat
I kept hate and then m.
From the letters in was able to unscramble the following... Motherland game cards show idiot mole

After taking another look at The title I think you're right. Now I am wondering if we should be keeping the letter pairs together or scrambling them all up.

I'm leaning toward keeping them in pairs but that makes anagramming harder

The only two replacement words I'm not 100% sure on are for 62D and 11D. The rest I'm 99% on, although my letter list is quite far from what was mentioned earlier.

does anyone else have Tilt twice for the parenthetical clues? no. I'm assuming your two are 17A and 11D. and I'd rethink the second one.
