I got in through the lock pick method, so still trying to see if there was something that would have given me that combo. If I hadn't already done Risen, I think the artifact would have been okay, though it's more difficult to display than the previous version. And what it is looks a little less like what it should than the original, which was a very creepy. I was sort of hoping for one other item based on the advertisements but I like the parts of this that were new.
That's my vague review.

It's not a very good puzzle. I spent hours going far into the weeds before finally reaching out to a concierge. I asked what lock combination the random word "PLAY" would be to see if I could reverse-engineer the code. Their response was "2324". Forget "American barcode technology"; it has nothing to do with that. Forget that each letter is followed by its ASCII equivalent in binary and that letter "A" would have been 65 decimal. Think of the strings of ones and zeros in the simplest way possible. I will say that the word chosen for the lock is very appropriate, though. The item itself is unidentifiable unless you have seen the Risen! artifact, but as Todd once pointed out, they still know how to make great boxes.

So I think I have the means of mapping a word to numbers based on your example, but I can't seem to figure out what the word is. Any hints along those lines? Based on your hint and a word I saw repeated several times in the letters, I had a guess that didn't pan out.

I had a different lock combo, so that's weird. Someone on another forum suggested what word would have worked to get the combo (using this rather odd method), but I can't see any way someone would have assumed that was the word. I'm going to PM you too rob to see what is up.

I had a different lock combo, so that's weird. I might be misunderstanding but the lock combos are all the same. The 4-digit combo in my spoiler section was for the word "PLAY" which I pulled out of the air

I'm guessing that they can only encode the digits 1 through 5 this way?

My lock code had no corresponding word and as stated above, after opening it, I was still unable to understand how the code related to anything in the story.

I just got my copy of this a few days ago and I'd like to weigh in in defense of the new artifact. It's true the artifact is not as eye grabbing as the original and you wouldn't be able to know what it is without reading the documents and it is most certainly harder to display. I do, however, feel this one fits in far better with the narrative. It's not the sort of thing that will catch the attention of a casual observer, it's far more subtle than that. It's the sort of thing that someone truly exploring your collection will find curious, open and ask about.

OK. So-that lock puzzle.....was much simpler than anticipated. If I hadn't seen folks have troubles with overthinking it, I wouldn't have thought that was it....but. Yup. That simple.

Well, can't really say that anyone likes a bragger nor can I understand the need to do so (look at me everyone, I'm so much smarter than you). Buuut since you have felt the need to do so, I feel the need to respond by saying go right head and pat yourself on the back but also be grateful that they didn't mess up the lock code on yours, as with with mine, where one of the numbers was wrong. If that were indeed the case, I doubt you would feel the need to make a post specifically for the purpose of being boastful. Happy Solstice.

That wasn't a boast-it was a statement of surprise, as well as comiseration in regards to remarks made earlier in the thread- but thanks for being a jerk at random.
