TAROT
- this may be useless!
- but maybe a shared storytelling angle
- archetypes, etc. can help us see ourselves in
stories.
- also it's a short leap from Harari's
imagining a project -> fortune telling...?
- Power of Tarot - Liz Worth...
apparently a good place to start.
- "built on reinvention, not consensus"
- "we are not human beings having a spiritual
experience. We are spiritual beings having
a human experience" ' de Chardin
- "I always avoid speaking in absolutes." LOL
- medieval Europe origin, as a bridge-style
card game
- incorrect origin stories: ancient Egypt,
Kabbalah... 18th C French weirdos made
these connections, but they're fabricated.
- Eliphas Levi (French esotericist): "An
imprisoned person, with no other book
than the tarot, if he knew how to use
it, could in a few years acquire
universal knowledge & would be able to
speak on all subjects w unequalled learning
& inexhaustible eloquence:
-> this makes grad school look reeeaal bad
- Think about (scribbled out)
- "Its symbolism & stories can be
looked at as an oral history of sorts,
where we as readers might share a bit
Page 25
of wisdom inspired by a certain colour
or pattern that we see in the cards. Maybe
we infuse its meanings with our own
histories & experiences, or maybe we
weave in cultural folk tales from our
own communities & upbringings. Maybe
we use it as a storehouse for our
own perspectives from this moment
in time" - Liz Worth, Power of Tarot
^- this is like a Rorschach test for
the zeitgeist, it's a story we're all
telling ourselves about ourselves. No
use for the spooky/magic side of
tarot, but this angle is maybe great.
- Worth is clear that they're just cards,
which is going to be useful "This can't
get too "woo"
- the RWS - (Rider - Waite - Smith) deck is the
classic/default so a lot of the
common images come from there
-> that seems kind of weird & arbitrary?
22 cards (Margin note 22 cards -> 22 stories in If On A...?) Major Arcana (arcana=secret)/Minor Arcana
-> in their order, they're a story: the
Fool walks a path of the rest of the
sequence.
-> ending at the World, where it all comes together
Minor - 4 suits/4 elements. Practical
material stuff
-> Wands Pentacles Cups Swords
Fire earth Water air
